Lady Cats are tournament champs two weeks in a row

By Lindsey Kunz
Medina ISD Superintendent/Athletic Director

The Medina Lady Cats were named Medina Tournament Champions on Saturday, Aug. 31, with a win over the Lady Pirates from Center Point.
The tournament began Friday, Aug. 30, with Medina matched up with Kipp Somos and Atonement in pool play. Four straight sets later by scores of 25-10, 25-14, 25-13, and 25-18 the Lady Cats had earned the number one seed from their pool leading into Saturday’s bracket play.
The first matchup in the bracket had the Lady Cats taking on the Kipp Somos team again who were just coming from a big win over one of their own rivals. Medina came out strong though, and defeated the Somos team in straight sets by set scores of 25-10, 25-16. The win moved the Lady Cats to the Championship match versus Center Point.
Medina began the championship game with aggressive play at the net and from the serving line keeping the Lady Pirates on defense throughout the set. The aggression ensured that the Lady Cats cruised to a 25-9 victory. The second set was a different story, though, as the Lady Cats got off to a rough start but were able to fight back to win 25-18 and take the championship.
Senior Brooke Mancha and Junior Audrey Gatlin earned All-Tournament honors, while Senior Hallie Kunz was awarded tournament MVP.  All three players concluded the tournament leading their team in total kills, aces, assists, digs and passing percentage.
“It was a complete team effort to take the championship. We are really beginning to gel as a team and play uptempo Medina volleyball. We had key contributions from senior Ahnika Grassie at the net earning 18 kills in the tournament, as well as junior Kailey McCabe and senior Ella Castillo who each tallied 4 aces. Sophomore Crista Zirkel added in her own 10 kills while senior Sienna Carter triumphed with 15 digs and a 100 percent serving percentage,” the Medina Lady Cat coach said.
The Lady Cats will travel to Center Point to take on the Lady Pirates again on Friday, Sept. 6.
In other volleyball action, the Junior High Lady Cats earned a big victory over D’Hanis on Monday, Aug. 26, by scores of 27-25 and 25-10.
