The Bandera boys cross country team showed remarkable improvement at the third annual Steve Golemon Invitational Meet Saturday morning, with several runners trimming more than a minute off their race times from last week.
Junior Zach Goodin hit a two mile split in the low 11:00 range during his 5k and finished at 17:43 for the Bulldogs’ fastest time of the season, placing 13th overall out of 120 runners. Bandera’s top 7 varsity runners improved their times by a total of 4 minutes and 44 seconds from last week, helping Bandera finish sixth out of 14 teams.
“Our goal was to get our times faster and push hard for the last mile,” Head Coach Aidan Keane said. “We also had a goal of bringing home more medals this week, and we accomplished both of those goals. We also had a lot of runners PR, so we’re showing growth and that’s exciting to see as we get closer to the district meet.”
In addition to Goodin’s strong finish, Ruben Ruiz Palacios medaled for the varsity Bulldogs with a time of 18:28. Hayden Swalve ran a 19:09, Michael Verhey ran a 19:38, Ayden Sarver ran a 19:39, Adan Sixtos ran a 20:09, Dominic Garcia ran a 20:32, Jacob Tuma ran a 20:40 and Walter Roque ran a 21:10 to round out the varsity performers.
At the JV Level, the Bulldogs finished third behind a strong race from Carter Rissmiller, who improved his time by almost two minutes from last week and finished 14th with a time of 20:41. Luciano Martinez (22:10), Keaton Sarver (22:32), Tristan Wilson (22:39), Michael Ramirez (22:39), Kelton Raab (23:24), Dominic Segovia (24:07), Adrian Aguirre (24:26), Marcus Gonzalez (25:05), AJ Rios (26:48) also competed at the JV level.
The Bulldogs will be off from competition this week and will continue preparation for the McNeil Invitational on Friday, Sept. 20, where they expect to see a number of district and regional competitors.
“We hit all of our goals this week, which is huge,” Keane said. “We are excited to continue building toward that McNeil Invitational, and hope to show what we can do as a team against that level of competition.”
