The Bandera defense continued to shine and the offense had a record-setting performance through the air, leading the Bulldogs to a second consecutive 2-0 start with a 28-21 win over Ingram Friday night at Warrior Stadium.
Junior wide receiver Jeffry Thomas set a school record for receiving yards in a single game, hauling in 10 catches for 268 yards and two touchdowns, while Ingram managed just 224 yards of total offense thanks to a stout effort from the Bandera defense.
“I thought we had great effort all night,” Bandera Head Coach Joel Fontenot-Amedee said. “Our guys flew around to the football on defense and special teams. We had a lot of turnovers that we have to clean up but I was proud that our guys kept responding the right way.”
The Bulldogs forced a quick three-and-out to open the game and moved quickly into scoring position before the first of five turnovers ended a promising drive. Ingram and Bandera exchanged punts from there, until the Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie with a 92-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Dylan Peace to Thomas down the right sideline with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter.
Ingram answered quickly after a couple of long runs set up a 1-yard touchdown that tied the game at 7-7 with 1:12 to go in the first.
The Bandera defense kept Ingram from crossing midfield in the second quarter, and the offense capitalized on strong field position shortly before halftime after a pair of 13 and 16-yard passes to Thomas set up a 2-yard rushing touchdown from senior Julian De La Paz to make it 14-7 in favor of the Bulldogs at the half.
The Bulldogs continued to roll early in the third quarter and scored on their first possession of the second half after moving into the red zone on a 22-yard pass from Peace to junior h-back Benton Cloudt. Peace and Cloudt connected five plays later on a 7-yard touchdown pass, giving Bandera a 21-7 lead.
Ingram climbed back into the game, though, as a Bandera turnover later in the third set up a 48-yard touchdown pass for the Warriors. The Bulldogs answered right back with an 82-yard touchdown pass from Peace to Thomas, but Ingram stayed within a touchdown as a handful of costly penalties allowed the Warriors to pull back within 28-21 on a 2-yard touchdown run in the 4th.
The Bandera defense got a pair of big stops late in the game to seal the win, though, as a key 3rd down sack from Jackson Satterfield, Benton Cloudt, and Gavin Spruell ultimately allowed the Bulldogs to get the ball back and kneel out the remainder of the clock.
“Ingram has a very good quarterback who is hard to tackle,” Fontenot-Amedee said. “We did a great job of swarming to the football and tackling him low. Our defensive line has really stepped up so far this season and they had a great game again last Friday.”
Sophomore outside linebacker Jonah Klein (5 tackles, 2 TFL, 0.5 sack, 1 PBU) and senior defensive lineman Josh Goff (7 tackles, 0.5 TFL, 0.5 sack) were named co-defensive players of the game for their efforts, and defensive coordinator Jacob Campsey said other standouts included Spruell (6 tackles, 0.5 sack), Satterfield (9 tackles, 1.5 TFL, 1 sack) and senior linebacker Kenny Seth (8 tackles).
Offensively, Peace finished with 19-of-29 passing for 389 yards and three touchdowns while sophomore Breydan Gherman paced the run game with 20 carries for 74 yards. Thomas had the record-setting effort of 10 catches for 268 yards and two touchdowns, Snavely contributed two catches for 56 yards, Benton Cloudt had 3 catches for 31 yards and a touchdown, and Ibraham MacNeil had three catches for 27 yards.
“‘J-Three!’ There has been something like 86 or 87 years of Bandera football and this has never happened. He has an amazing knack for making big time plays when we need them. He had touchdowns of 93 and 82 yards. JT has been one of the hardest workers in our program and it showed on Friday night. Obviously, no one player does it on his own - especially at receiver. But if you haven’t seen him play yet, come on out to the homecoming game this Friday and check our guy out!”
The Bulldogs will be focused on eliminating turnovers and improving efficiency in the red zone as they prep for Friday night’s homecoming game against Lytle, which is set for 7 p.m., at Bulldog Stadium. The Pirates are coming off a 30-14 win over Natalia and will bring another physical challenge to the table for Bandera.
“Lytle is a big, physical football team,” Fontenot-Amedee said. “It should be another great matchup. There’s no better place to be in the Hill Country than Bulldog Stadium during homecoming. Our crowd shows up and shows out! Let it be known that we want all the former Bulldogs to be there early, get their money signs up on third down, chant the Seven Nation Army theme before kickoffs, and we want to see a sea of 4’s high in the air to start the fourth quarter. See you Friday!”
