Bandera volleyball falls in five-set thriller to Fredericksburg

By Brady Keane
The Bandera Prophet

Facing two of the top three teams in District 26-4A, the Bandera varsity volleyball team battled through a challenging week while falling to state-ranked Davenport and pushing Fredericksburg to an extended five-set thriller.
On Oct. 15, Bandera fell in straight sets (15-25, 18-25, 14-25) to Davenport, the defending state champions. Standout performances in that match included Taytum Moeller with 16 digs and Sydney Moore with 3 kills. Kinlee Lawlis also contributed 6 kills, and Ally Kline led the team with 17 assists.
On Friday, the Bulldogs bounced back well in an exciting, back-and-forth match, taking the Billies to the wire in an extended fifth set. While ultimately falling 25-22, 19-25, 21-25, 25-16, 14-16, Jayla Blake posted 14 kills, 22 digs, four blocks and four aces. Lawlis added 14 kills and two blocks, Jessi Battle had four kills, three blocks and four digs, Kline recorded 34 assists, Moeller had 16 digs, and Moore contributed five kills.
“We fought our way back against Fredericksburg and gave ourselves a chance,” Bandera Head Coach Tisha Pettibon said. “It was good to see that kind of fight from our team. We treated it like a playoff game, because it was for us, and I thought we did a great job of playing with that kind of intensity regardless of the final outcome.”
The Bulldogs, now 13-24 overall and 0-7 in district play, will look to bounce back as they travel to Canyon Lake on Tuesday night. Bandera fell in straight sets to the Hawks in the first round of district play, but they are hoping to build on the positives from last week’s learning experiences as the season winds down.
While Bandera is eliminated from playoff contention, Pettibon said the last two weeks will be about competing well and finishing the right way for the senior class.
“I'm disappointed for our seniors, but I'm so proud of their leadership this season,” Pettibon said. “We didn't accomplish our goal of getting into the playoffs, but our seniors have led so well and upped the level of volleyball we are playing while competing in a really tough district. Our goal is to try to stack as many wins as possible here in the last two weeks and have fun in the process.”
