The Bandera volleyball team picked up its first district win last Tuesday night against Canyon Lake, defeating the Hawks in a thrilling five-set match (25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 23-25, 15-7), before falling to a tough Wimberley team on Friday.
The 1-1 week moved Bandera to 14-25 on the season and 1-8 in district play with just one match to go in the regular season.
With senior night festivities and a home crowd on their side, the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick two set lead after taking down Canyon Lake 25-23 and 25-17. But after dropping the next two sets, Bandera found itself in another Game 5. This time, the Bulldogs maintained their composure to secure the final set 15-7, clinching the match and their first district win since Oct. 17, 2023.
“This was a huge win for us,” first-year head coach Tisha Pettibon said. “The girls fought hard, and it was great to see their perseverance pay off. They played with intensity until the final point. The fact that the seniors got to finish their last home match with a win was just icing on the cake.”
Kinlee Lawlis’ led the way with an impressive performance that included 22 kills and 18 digs, while Ally Kline not only added 36 assists and 16 digs, but also reached an impressive career milestone by surpassing 1,000 assists. Jayla Blake contributed 14 kills and 21 digs, Jessi Battle had five kills, four blocks, and two digs, and Taytum Moeller anchored the defense with an impressive 22 digs and one assist. Sydney Moore chipped in five kills, one block, and one dig, while Taylor Hamilton contributed three kills and two digs, and Kyra Blake added two aces, two assists and 11 digs.
The Bulldogs faced a tougher challenge three days later when they traveled to Wimberley, the District 26-4A leader. Wimberley won that match in three sets, 25-12, 25-10, 25-20. Despite the loss, Bandera had a strong showing in the final set, pushing Wimberley before falling 25-20.
Lawlis led the way for Bandera with nine kills and 18 digs, while Jayla Blake contributed six kills and nine digs. Kline added 14 assists and four digs, and Battle added two kills and seven digs.
The Bulldogs will close out the 2024 season on the road this Tuesday against Navarro. While Bandera is out of the playoff race, Pettibon and her players are looking to build on the progress they’ve made throughout the year and finish the season on a high note.
