Notes from Bandera City Council

Bandera City Council members approved the $58,640 purchase of a 26-foot commercial Christmas tree and a 50-foot tunnel of lights for the Country Christmas in the Park event at City Park.
The expenditures are expected to be reimbursed by the Economic Development Corporation, pending statutory obligations that include a public notice and hearing. If 10 percent of the voters protest the expenditure, a special election could be required to release the funds.
As a contingency, city treasurer Allyson Wright was directed to create a line item for the expense in the city’s budget.
“We’re going to actively start looking for sponsors,” City Council Member Lynn Palmer said. “There was an economic motivation, as well as working toward more family events.”
Country Christmas in the Park will debut Sunday, Dec. 1, from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m., at City Park.

In her monthly report, Marshal Nancy De Foster reported the Marshal’s Office responded to 111 calls during September, including 14 alarm calls and eight car accidents. She said 50 citations were issued, and deputies traveled 3,192 miles.
“We are still looking for applicants,” De Foster said, who is taking patrol shifts while the office is short-staffed.
City deputies will begin phasing out pepper ball guns, which De Foster said are “problematic pieces of equipment.”
“People have lost their eyes,” De Foster said, adding she will bring back tasers and verify all deputies are certified to use them.
Through the Trap Neuter Release program, assisted by Sandra Schott and Saving Shelter Strays, the city has spayed or neutered 39 feral cats at no cost to taxpayers. An additional 40 vouchers are available through the Marshal’s Office.

In other business, Roy Dugosh, of Stop Right There Pictures, reported The Cowboy Capital, a documentary about Bandera, will be shown on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the 19th Austin Polish Film Festival. The show will premier at 2 p.m., followed by a Q&A session.
“The film is wonderful, it’s beyond our dreams,” Dugosh said, adding the next goal is to be shown at the South by Southwest Film Festival. “We’re proud of the film, we’re proud of Bandera.”
