The Bandera varsity boys basketball team wrapped up a pair of preseason scrimmages last week, showing flashes of potential against a pair of talented programs.
The Bulldogs fell to Marion 53-34 on Saturday, Nov. 2, due in large part to a slow start offensively. Bandera trailed 18-3 after the first, but showed signs of resilience while holding Marion scoreless for the first 4:00 of the second quarter and trimming the deficit to just six points at the half.
“We came out a little flat, and it took some time for us to find our rhythm,” Bandera Head Coach Brady Keane said. “But we scheduled tough scrimmages to see how we could handle some adversity, and I thought we had some really good moments - especially on the defensive side - after the first quarter.”
Sophomore Cooper Franklin finished with 11 points while junior James Bower had 7 points and took 2 charges. Senior Eli Salas had a team-high 6 rebounds and 3 assists, while junior Anden Tentis-De Grote had three points and six rebounds.
Wednesday’s scrimmage against Pleasanton was a different story for the Bulldogs, as the team opened with plenty of energy while setting the tone right from the opening tip. Bandera held a slim lead at the halftime break but poured in 22 points in the third quarter to extend the lead before holding off a Pleasanton rally and hanging on for a 63-60 win.
“Our energy was there from the start, and it made a huge difference,” Keane said. “The guys played with a lot of intensity, and they were feeding off each other. We won the 50/50 loose balls, shared the ball on offense, and were relentless on defense. It was a fun way to end the pre-season.”
Salas posted a game-high 21 points, 7 rebounds and 6 steals while senior Beau Bergfeld chipped in 13 points and four assists. Tentis-De Grote had six points and 12 rebounds, Bower had 7 points, four steals and three assists, Franklin had seven points and six rebounds, senior Gattlin Winkler had six points and five rebounds, and senior Hayden Winters had three points and three rebounds.
The Bulldogs will now turn their focus to Tuesday’s season-opener against San Antonio Fox Tech. The Buffaloes are coming off a tightly contested 44-40 loss to San Antonio MacArthur in their season-opener Saturday.
Fox Tech will rely heavily on its interior play against Bandera, as the Buffaloes outscored MacArthur 26-8 in the paint and won the rebounding battle 34-24. Tip off is set for 6:30 pm Tuesday night at Bandera High School for the varsity game. The Bandera JV will play at 5 p.m.
“We’re excited about the opportunity to open the year in front of our home crowd,” Keane said. “Fox Tech is a physical team that’s tough inside, and I know our guys are looking forward to that challenge. We’re just focused on executing our game, staying disciplined defensively and generating good shots by sharing the ball offensively. If we do those things, we’ll continue to build on the positives we’ve seen so far.”
