The Bandera varsity girls basketball team is off to a strong start after picking up back-to-back wins in the first two games of the season.
The Bulldogs opened the year on Friday, Nov. 1, with a dominant 59-38 win on the road at Gonzales, before picking up a 59-32 home win over Carrizo Springs on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Against the Lady Apaches, Bandera took control early with relentless defensive pressure and a strong presence in the paint. Junior Brooklyn Grabs led the team’s inside attack, scoring 16 points thanks in part to converting 8 of 11 free throw opportunities. Senior point guard Gabby Barrera also took charge in the second half, hitting five of her seven 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 30 points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists, and eight steals.
The Lady Bulldogs held a commanding 30-13 lead at halftime and didn’t let up, keeping Gonzales to single-digit scoring in two of four quarters.
“We wanted to come out and set the tone right from the start,” Bandera Head Coach Cody Carruthers said. “Brooklyn was tough down low, and Gabby got hot from the 3-point line in the second half, which really opened things up. Our defense was tenacious, and that helped us pull away.”
Bandera carried that momentum into its home opener against Carrizo Springs on Tuesday, opening the game with two quick steals by junior guard Taytum Moeller, who converted both into easy layups. The team’s fast start led to a 22-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, with Barrera again lighting up the scoreboard with three 3-pointers in the first.
“Defense has been our focus, and it’s paid off through our first two games,” Carruthers said. “We’re putting pressure on teams right from the start, and that’s opening up a lot of opportunities on the offensive end. The girls are playing with a little bit of confidence right now.”
Barrera led all scorers with 19 points and added six steals, while Grabs continued her consistent play with 14 points. Bandera’s defensive effort overwhelmed Carrizo Springs, holding the Wildcats to just 22.7% shooting in the game.
The Lady Bulldogs’ JV team has also started strong, winning 44-6 against Gonzales and 45-29 over Carrizo Springs. Sophomore Becky Gomez led the JV squad with 18 points in the Carrizo Springs game, while freshman Mia Ranly controlled the boards with 11 rebounds.
With a 2-0 record, the Lady Bulldogs varsity team will now shift its focus to Friday’s home game against Eagle Pass. The Eagles are 2-2 on the season with wins over San Antonio Cole and Somerset and losses to Laredo Martin and Laredo Nixon.
“We are working to get better one day at a time,” Carruthers said. “Our schedule will continue to get more difficult, so we can’t be satisfied.”
