Bandera girls win Poteet Tournament

Bandera Prophet Staff

After defeating Hondo Tuesday and losing star point guard Gabby Barrera to an ankle injury, the Bulldogs regrouped and marched to a 4-1 record at the Poteet Tournament to bring home a first place trophy entering the Thanksgiving Break.
Bandera jumped out to a 28-16 lead in the first half against Hondo before Barrera, who is averaging more than 20 points per game, was sidelined. But the Bulldogs rallied together to defeat the Owls 49-32, setting the tone for a strong weekend performance in Poteet.
Kinlee Lawlis had 16 points and seven rebounds in the win over Hondo while Kourtney Frerich posted 14 points and eight rebounds. Brooklyn Grabs had eight points and 11 rebounds while Taytum Moeller finished with five points and nine rebounds.
“Obviously, it was tough losing Gabby,” Bandera head coach Cody Carruthers said. “She’s a big part of what we do, but the girls stepped up and found a way to win. We had to lean on each other. The girls trusted their teammates, and we got contributions from everyone.”
The Bulldogs lost the first game of the Poteet Tournament to Class 1A powerhouse Nueces Canyon in a 43-30 finish, but responded with a 41-5 win over Three Rivers. Frerich had 13 points and four rebounds in that win, while Lawlis posted 10 points and seven rebounds. Jessi Battle contributed eight points and three steals, and Moeller had six points and six assists.
Bandera then defeated Pleasanton 53-30 behind a 16-point effort from Rehbehka Gomez, and went on to knock off Poteet 43-21 behind a 15-point effort from Frerich.
In the championship rematch against Nueces Canyon, Moeller posted 10 points, five rebounds and five assists while Grabs had 12 points and three rebounds. Frerich had 10 points and five rebounds, and Lawlis added nine points, six steals and four rebounds in a 45-33 win.
Lawlis was named the Tournament MVP while Moeller and Frerich were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
The Bulldogs are now 8-1 on the season, surpassing last year’s 8-2 start to the year. Bandera will be back in action Monday at 4:30 p.m. at the Frost Bank Center against Llano before heading to Thanksgiving Break. The Bulldogs will return to action on Dec. 3 in Pearsall.
“We kept improving in each game,” Carruthers said. “By the time we got to the championship, we were really playing with some confidence again. These girls don’t back down. They’ll fight for each other, and it’s fun to be a part of.”
