Lady Bulldogs look to rebound tonight after loss to Llano

The Bandera girls basketball team got off to a slow start over Thanksgiving Break while playing at the Frost Bank Center against Llano, and a late comeback effort came up just short as the Yellow Jackets held on for a 25-21 win in the San Antonio Spurs’ arena.
The Lady Bulldogs led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter but trailed 7-4 at the half. Bandera battled back to take a 15-13 lead late in the third, but Llano did just enough down the stretch to hold on for the win.
“We had some opportunities, but we didn’t take advantage of them,” Bandera Head Coach Cody Carruthers said. “Llano’s size gave us trouble, and we struggled to find a rhythm offensively.”
Bandera held Llano to just 24.3% shooting from the floor, but the Yellow Jackets shot 22 free throws compared to Bandera’s nine attempts from the line. The Lady Bulldogs struggled with turnovers, and finished with 23 in the game.
“We’re playing good defense, but turnovers and missed opportunities on offense are hurting us,” Carruthers said. “We’ve got to clean that up and be better about taking care of the ball.”
Brooklyn Grabs led the way for Bandera while posting 15 points and five rebounds. Taytum Moeller added two points, five rebounds and three assists, and Kourtney Frerich finished with two points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Bulldogs are back in action on the road tonight against Pearsall as they look to bounce back and build some momentum before heading to the Llano Tournament this weekend. Bandera is still playing without leading scorer Gabby Barrera, who is averaging 20.8 points per game this season, as she continues to work her way back from an ankle injury.
The Lady Bulldogs will be back on the road Tuesday against YWLA before hosting Poth on Dec. 13. The team’s final non-district game is at home against Randolph on Dec. 17, with district play set to open after Christmas Break on Jan. 3 at Davenport.
“Gabby is a big part of what we do offensively, but this is a great opportunity for others to step up and grow,” Carruthers said. “We just need to stay focused and keep improving in the days leading up to the start of district.”
