Bandera girls basketball finishes third in Silver Bracket at Llano Tourney

Bandera Prophet Staff

The Bandera varsity girls basketball team took home third place in the Silver Bracket of the Llano Tournament over the weekend, knocking off Coleman 55-33 in pool play before recording a thrilling 40-38 overtime win over Bangs to close out the tournament.
It was an exciting end to a busy week for the Bulldogs, who went 3-2 in five games throughout the week.
“It was a challenging week with a lot of games, but I’m proud of how the girls responded,” HeadCoach Cody Carruthers said. “Finishing off the Llano Tournament with an overtime win was a great way to end the week with some momentum.”
Bandera opened the week with a 51-31 road win over Pearsall. Junior Brooklyn Grabs dominated from start to finish, posting 17 points and 11 rebounds in the win, while junior Kourtney Frerich added an impressive 12 points, eight rebounds and eight steals.
After getting off to a slow start, the Bulldogs built an 8-point lead heading to the 4th quarter. Bandera then used its high-pressure defense to hold Pearsall to just two points in the final frame to pull away for the win.
“We didn’t start as strong as we wanted, but the girls locked in defensively when it mattered,” Carruthers said. “Giving up just two points in the fourth quarter is always going to give you a good chance to win a close game.”
In the Llano Tournament, the Bulldogs opening win over Coleman was dominant from start to finish. Bandera racked up 33 points off turnovers and had 25 steals in the game, coasting to a 55-33 win.
Cameryn Plummer had a team-high 14 points while Frerich added 12 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Grabs added seven points and four rebounds while Jessi Battle finished with four points and one assist.
The Bulldogs struggled in a 56-23 loss to Goldthwaite and a 50-21 loss to Frost, but responded well in the final game of the weekend with a 40-38 win over Bangs to secure third place in the silver bracket after an overtime thriller.
The game was tied at the end of the second, this and fourth quarters before junior Kourtney Frerich’s layup off an offensive rebound in the overtime frame pushed Bandera ahead for good. Carly Serene connected on three big second-half 3-pointers, and Grabs finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team.
“Goldthwaite and Frost are strong teams and those games gave us a look at what we need to improve on over the next few weeks,” Carruthers said. “The important thing was the way we responded against Bangs.”
The Bulldogs are now 11-4 on the season and are set to travel to take on the YWLA Cardinals tonight, before returning home Friday to host Post. Bandera will host Randolph on Tuesday Dec. 17 in the team’s final game before the Christmas break.
“Our schedule doesn’t get any easier, and we are going to continue to be challenged as we prepare for the start of district,” Carruthers said. “These are all good games to get us ready for what we’re going to see, and we’re excited for the challenge.”
