Bandera senior Kinlee Lawlis announced her commitment to Angelo State University to continue her track and field career at the college level after graduating this spring.
Lawlis, a multi-sport athlete for the Bulldogs who has shined in cross country, volleyball, basketball, softball and track and field throughout her high school career, will compete in relays, sprints and long jump at the next level.
“This is extra special for me because I also ran cross country and track at Angelo State,” Bandera Assistant Athletic Director and Head Girls Track/Cross Country Coach Brooke Ashcraft said. “Kinlee has worked tirelessly in and out of season with a commitment to excel in the challenges that are set before her. Kinlee excels at everything she commits herself to. Without a doubt, there are big things ahead in this next season. I am so excited for her and her family!”
Lawlis shattered the record books at Bandera High School last year, setting new marks in the 100m and 200m runs in addition to new records in the long jump and 4x200m relay. Lawlis was third in three of her four events at the Class 4A Region IV meet, narrowly missing out on a chance to secure an at-large bid for the state meet.
Lawlis was also named to the first team all-district team in volleyball as a junior and senior, and earned honorable mention all-district honors in basketball and softball last year.
Angelo State’s women’s track and field team has a national reputation for excellence, and is coming off a national championship in the 4x400m relay last season. Angelo State is coached by Tom Dibbern, who took over the program in 2017 and is a 7-time Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year.
“The track team made me feel welcome when I went up to visit, and it was a great environment,” Lawlis said. “I felt comfortable with the campus right away. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to compete at a high level in college and am excited to continue working to improve this year with my teammates so that I’m prepared for the challenges ahead.”
