The Bandera girls basketball team extended its winning streak to four games with a 53-37 win over Randolph Tuesday night, giving the team momentum heading into Christmas Break and the final tournament of the year prior to the start of District 26-4A play.
The Lady Bulldogs recorded wins over YWLA and Poth last week before taking down Randolph at home and improving to 14-4 on the season.
Bandera gave Randolph problems from the opening tip with its full-court defensive pressure, and after building a 28-19 lead at the half, the Bulldogs led by as many as 22 points in the final two quarters. Randolph shot just 23.8 percent from the field, and Bandera outrebounded the Rohawks 43-19 in the win.
Gabby Barrera finished with 16 points and nine steals, Kinlee Lawlis had eight points and nine rebounds, Brooklyn Grabs had nine points and 11 rebounds, Jessi Battle added six points and four rebounds, and Cameryn Plummer finished with five points.
“Our defensive pressure really set the tone from the start,” Carruthers said. “The girls executed our game plan well, and it showed. We controlled the glass, and forced them to take low percentage shots most of the night.”
Last week, the Lady Bulldogs picked up a solid 52-40 home win over Poth. Barrera posted 19 points and three assists in that game while Taytum Moeller added 10 points and four assists. Grabs had nine points and five rebounds, and Kourtney Frerich chipped in seven points, five rebounds and four assists.
Bandera also recorded an 82-34 win over YWLA on the road, jumping out to a 47-11 halftime lead. Grabs posted 15 points, Barrera had 14, Lawlis had 12 and Battle and Rehbehka Gomez added 10 apiece.
“The win over Poth was a good one for us,” Carruthers said. “We made big plays when it mattered, and seeing different people step up over the last few weeks to contribute has been great.”
Bandera will now be off until after Christmas, when the team is set to travel to Corpus Christi for the West Oso Tournament on Dec. 27-28. The Lady Bulldogs will begin district play on the road at Davenport on Jan. 3.
“We’re in a good spot right now heading into the break, but we know that the competition is only going to get tougher from here,” Carruthers said. “The West Oso Tournament will help us see some quality competition again before district, so we will have to shake the rust off from the time out of the gym and be ready to go.”
