On this day in 1886, the Driskill Hotel opened in Austin. The hotel was one of the grandest in Texas, the meeting place of legislators, lobbyists and the social leaders of Austin, and was the site of inaugural balls, elaborate banquets, receptions and university dances and ceremonies.

Free New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Pipe Creek

The Pipe Creek Community Center will sponsor a free fireworks display in their parking lot to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
The event will take place Tuesday, Dec. 31. Visitors are asked to arrive between 5:45 and 6:15 p.m. Drive through the gate at 165 FM 1283; the PCCC is located at the corner of Hwy. 16 and FM 1283.
The PCCC will have concessions of food and water, which will be available for purchase.
