Bandera boys pick up two wins entering Christmas Break

The Bandera boys basketball team finished the first semester with a pair of wins over Floresville and San Antonio Memorial, moving to 13-4 heading into the Christmas Break.
The Bulldogs defeated Floresville, who started the year ranked in the top 20 of Class 4A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, 66-57 at home Tuesday night. Bandera then traveled to San Antonio Memorial and defeated the Minutemen 72-34 in a dominant effort on Friday.
“We knew coming in that Floresville was a talented and physical team," Head Boys Basketball Coach Brady Keane said. "Our guys set the tone early with a high level of intensity on both ends of the floor. I was proud of the way we responded to their runs in the second half and stayed composed to finish strong."
In the win over Floresville, the Bulldogs made a statement from the opening possession as senior Gattlin Winkler played with a physicality the Tigers’ post players had trouble matching. Bandera led 20-10 at the end of the first and 31-25 at the half as Floresville started to knock down a couple of 3-point shots in the second quarter.
The second-half featured a lot of back-and-forth scoring as the Tigers trimmed the deficit to 33-31 midway through the third before a pulled away and built an 11 point lead entering the fourth. Bandera never trailed in the game, and dominated the glass while outrebounding Floresville 38-26.
Senior Eli Salas finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists while senior Beau Bergfeld added 15 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. Junior Jeffry Thomas had 13 points and three assists, sophomore Cooper Franklin added nine points and three rebounds, and Winkler posted six points and three rebounds in the win.
Bandera continued its momentum into Friday’s game at Memorial, jumping out to a 40-17 first-half lead before coasting to a 72-34 victory. The Bulldogs dominated the interior from start to finish, outscoring Memorial 38-12 in the paint and outrebounding the Minutemen 47-23. Bandera also posted a season-high 22 assists in the win.
Bergfeld led the way with 22 points, six rebounds and three assists while Salas added 14 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Franklin added eight points, seven rebounds and five assists, Winkler had eight points and two rebounds, Thomas had eight points, three rebounds and four assists, and Jackson Satterfield added five points and five rebounds in the win.
“We definitely wanted to build on what we did in Tuesday’s win, and the guys did just that," Keane said. "Our ability to dominate the paint and share the basketball with 22 assists showed how well our team is playing together right now. It was a total team effort."
The Bulldogs will return from a six-day break to participate in the Randolph Tournament Dec. 27-28, before traveling to take on Llano on Friday Jan. 3. Bandera will then play La Grange in San Marcos on Monday Jan. 6 before hosting Fredericksburg in the District 26-4A opener on Friday Jan. 10.
“The Randolph Tournament and our games against Llano and La Grange will be important tests for us before district play begins," Keane added. "We’ve built a solid foundation through the first half of the year, but the real challenge will be maintaining that consistency against some tough district opponents. We are confident this group is ready for what we’re going to be up against next month.”
