The Bandera boys soccer teams picked up a pair of wins Tuesday night against Uvalde, with both JV and varsity putting together strong performances at Bulldog Stadium.
The JV boys, competing in their season opener, got off to a strong start with a 3-0 win. Daniel Mifsud, Miguel Avalos and David Gutierrez each scored for the Bulldogs, with assists coming from Gutierrez, Caiden Grey and Avalos. Defensively, Travis Triesch and Oscar Noguera-Murach stepped up with key plays to keep Uvalde off the scoreboard.
“The JV boys worked hard tonight and played a complete game,” Bandera Head Soccer Coach Westley Miller said. “It’s great to see them start the season on such a strong note.”
The varsity Bulldogs followed with a 4-2 win, improving their record to 6-2-1. Jace Knowles got Bandera on the board first with a goal assisted by Diego Murado-Gomez. Uvalde answered just before halftime, tying the game at 1-1. Both teams struggled to break through early in the second half, but Bandera found a spark with a goal from Gomez, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
Knowles added his second goal of the night late in the game, scoring on a header off a corner kick from Hayden Swalve. Quinlan King had a shot on goal that was saved by the Uvalde keeper, but Swalve followed it up with a goal of his own to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to 4-1. Uvalde managed to score on a corner kick in the closing seconds, but Bandera held on for the win.
“We had a lot of great effort plays all over the field tonight,” Miller said. “The guys adjusted well and executed after halftime. They’re playing as a team, and it’s showing in the result.”
Stat leaders for the Bulldogs included Knowles with two goals and a steal, Gomez with a goal, an assist, and six steals, and Swalve with a goal, an assist, and two steals. Quinlan King led the team with seven steals, while Connor Garrett recorded three saves in goal.
The Bulldogs will face San Antonio Memorial from Edgewood ISD on Friday, with JV playing at 5 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.
“We’re starting to build some momentum as a team,” Miller said. “Each game gives us a chance to improve and prepare for what’s to come when we get to district, and Friday is another opportunity to get better and keep moving in the right direction.”
