Bandera senior Eli Salas was selected to the San Antonio Sports All-Star Basketball Game this weekend, joining an elite group of San Antonio Area players who will compete at Northside Sports Gym on Sunday, March 23.
Salas, a four-year letterman for the Bandera basketball program, will compete as a member of Team White, in the Class 1A through 5A game, at 2:15 p.m.
“It means a lot getting this nomination because the All-Star game is filled with the best of the best in San Antonio and the surrounding area,” Salas said. “I’m just glad I get another opportunity to go out there and play the game I love while representing my community.”
The San Antonio Sports All-Star Basketball Game is in its second year of existence. Last year, Bandera’s Isaac Segura was selected to be a part of Team Gold.
Salas has started every game in each of the last three seasons for the Bulldogs, helping the program advance to the playoffs in three straight years while also securing a playoff win for the first time in over a decade. He’s racked up 1,263 points, 564 rebounds, 405 assists and 212 steals throughout his career, and has posted a record of 56-39 as a starter.
“Eli started playing with our summer team right after he finished 8th grade and he’s been a key part of turning the program around,” Bandera Head Coach Brady Keane said. “He works on his game year-round and there’s no doubt he deserves this opportunity to showcase his skillset among the best of the best in our area. We are looking forward to supporting him in the All-Star game and seeing where basketball takes him in the future as well.”
Salas will be coached in the all-star game by Alamo Heights Coach Andrew Brewer, who’s been the head coach at Alamo Heights since 2011. In 13 years with the Mules, Brewer has guided the program to seven district championships, four regional tournament appearances and two state tournaments.
Joining Salas on Team White will be Gunnar Jones (Alamo Heights), Casen Hoegemeyer (Boerne), Isaiah Martinez (Burbank), Carter Williams (Canyon Lake), Camrin Garza (John Jay), Jarrius Jackson Jr. (John Jay), Jeremiah Zurita (McCollum), Cole Redding (New Braunfels), Xavier Rendon (Pearsall), Nick Neudorfer (Poth), Christopher Badger (Randolph), Jeffrey Wilson (Southside), Giovanni Aranda (Southwest Legacy) and Drew Cristan (St. Anthony).
Salas has competed against Hoegemeyer, Williams, Neudorfer, Badger and Aranda over the years, and spent time playing with Rendon on the HD Toros summer team.
“It’s exciting to play alongside and against some familiar faces,” Salas said. “I’m really just looking forward to going out and competing with everything I’ve got against some of the best talent in the area.”
