Barrera leads Bandera girls to dominant win over Canyon Lake

By Brady Keane

The Bandera girls basketball team recorded a dominant win over Canyon Lake Friday night, outscoring the Hawks 35-14 in the first half before cruising to a 68-35 win.
Senior Gabby Barrera had an eye-popping 37 points, six rebounds and six assists while Cameryn Plummer chipped in six points and Taytum Moeller added seven points and three steals. Kourtney Frerich had seven points, four rebounds and three assists, and Brooklyn Grabs finished with five points, five rebounds and three assists.
“We played with a lot of energy and focus from the opening tip,” Head Coach Cody Carruthers said. “Our defense really set the tone, and we were able to get some easy looks on the offensive end because of it. It was a great team win.”
The Bulldogs had 18 steals and outrebounded Canyon Lake 36-26. Bandera had 25 points off turnovers, 18 points in transition, 11 second-chance points and 30 points in the paint. The Bulldogs also shot 9-of-26 from the 3-point line while holding Canyon Lake to just 25% shooting from the field.
The win moved Bandera to 17-12 on the season with three games to go in the regular season. The Bulldogs have already matched last year’s win total both on the season and in district play, and are two wins away from their most wins in a decade.
Bandera will host state-ranked Fredericksburg on Tuesday before hosting Wimberley on Friday, Jan. 31. The Bulldogs will close out the regular season on the road at Navarro on Feb. 4.
“We have three of the best teams on our schedule to finish the year but we did some really good things against all three of them in the first round of district play,” Carruthers said. “We’re excited for the challenge to build on the momentum from Friday and close out the regular season the right way.”
