The Bandera girls basketball team ended the year on a high note, taking down playoff bound Navarro 56-43 on the road Tuesday night in the final game of the regular season.
The win was fueled by another dominant effort from senior guard Gabby Barrera, who led the Bulldogs to a strong second and third quarter to help pull away from the Panthers and give Bandera a comfortable lead heading to the fourth quarter.
“We talked before the game about finishing the season off the right way,” Bandera Head Coach Cody Carruthers said. “Our girls showed a lot of heart, and I’m really proud of the way they competed from start to finish.”
Barrera connected on three 3-point shots in the first quarter and had 10 points in the second as well on her way to a 28-point outing in her last game as a Bulldog. Tatum Moeller had 12 points, including seven in the third quarter, and Kinlee Lawlis finished with six points in the win. Cameryn Plummer and Kourtney Frerich added three points apiece, and Brooklyn Grabs finished with four points.
The win moved the Bulldogs to 18-14 on the season and 2-8 in district play, surpassing last year’s win total of 17 games and a 1-9 record in district. 18 wins is the most Bandera has posted in a girls basketball season since 2015-2016.
Bandera finished fifth in district, just two games out of a playoff spot. Fredericksburg, Davenport, Wimberley and Navarro will represent District 26-4A in the postseason, with the Billies expected to make a run at the Class 4A State Championship.
“We wanted to take a step forward as a program this year, and this group bought in and did that,” Carruthers said. “Our seniors set the bar higher, and they’ve left a strong foundation for our younger players to build on.”
