Bandera boys fall to state-ranked Davenport, shift focus to Canyon Lake

Bandera Prophet Staff

The Bandera boys basketball team will play for a chance to extend its season Tuesday night as the Bulldogs travel to take on Canyon Lake in the final game of the regular season.
Bandera currently sits in a tie for 5th place in the district standings, but can force a three-way tie for fourth with a win over the Hawks and a Fredericksburg win over Navarro. The Bulldogs defeated Canyon Lake 38-37 in the first meeting between the teams and will be looking to replicate that performance on the road.
“We know what’s at stake and our guys are ready for the challenge,” Bandera Head Coach Brady Keane said. “Canyon Lake is well coached, and they’re a tough, physical team. We are going to have to outwork them on the glass and really set the tone with our defensive intensity from the opening tip.”
Bandera is coming off a tough 81-41 loss to state-ranked Davenport. The Bulldogs struggled to shoot the ball, finishing just 2-for-23 from the 3-point line and 9-of-28 from inside the arc, while Davenport shot over 67 percent from the field.
Bandera senior Eli Salas finished with 13 points and four rebounds, junior James Bower had nine points, eight rebounds and three assists, and sophomore Cooper Franklin finished with four points and six rebounds.
“We didn’t play our best game Friday night and they took advantage of every mistake,” Keane said. “We’ve moved on and are focused on what’s ahead. This team has shown a lot of resiliency all season, and I have no doubt they’ll be locked in ready to compete Tuesday night.”
The Bulldogs also recognized their senior class on Senior Night Friday, taking time to celebrate and recognize six seniors who have helped the program record three seasons with at least 20 wins in the last four years, reach the playoffs in three straight seasons, and bring home a playoff win for the first time in 10 years.
Bandera honored Jackson Satterfield, Layne Bourgeois, Hayden Winters, Eli Salas, Gattlin Winkler and Beau Bergfeld, in addition to celebrating its two senior trainers: Taylor Hamilton and Eric Meija-Cortez.
“This senior class has been a huge part of changing the perception of Bandera basketball, and they have done everything we’ve asked of them and more,” Keane said. “I could go on and on about what each of those seniors means to me and our program, but I am just so grateful for the opportunity to have coached them the last four years. They play so hard and represent their community with pride, and we are going to miss them a ton.”
The first meeting between Canyon Lake saw the Bulldogs edge out a win in a game that was dominated by defense. Bandera held Canyon Lake to 28 percent shooting from the field, and the Bulldogs grabbed 17 offensive rebounds to create 12 second chance points.
Senior Beau Bergfeld had 17 points and 13 rebounds in that win while Salas posted 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Junior Jeffry Thomas added five points, nine rebounds and three assists.
Tip-off for the rematch is set for 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, in Canyon Lake. Details of a potential 3-team play-in tournament will be announced as they become available.
“We got a win the first time because of the way we competed for rebounds and flew around on defense, and we are going to need every bit of that again,” Keane said. “If we add in a better emphasis on taking care of the ball and creating open shots offensively, we’ll be in a great spot Tuesday night.”
