The Bandera softball team was dominant in its final scrimmage of the pre-season Friday night, rolling past Sabinal 13-1.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by senior Bailey Word, who had an inside the park homerun in the team’s final at-bat to clear the bases and end the game via the 10-run mercy rule. Bandera Coach Keith Kuenzel was also impressed by sophomore pitcher Becky Gomez and freshman pitcher Mia Ranly, who combined to allow just one run on four hits in their first action of the season.
“The team camaraderie this season is fantastic,” Kuenzel said. “The in-game communication on the field and in the dugout have been one of the biggest improvements thus far and as it continues to develop, so will our program.”
The Bulldogs will open the regular season against Ingram Tuesday night, with the JV set to play at 5 p.m., and the varsity game set to start at 7 p.m. Last year, Bandera split the season series with Ingram. The Bulldogs are hoping to avenge that loss and start the regular season on the right foot.
“Ingram has a tough team, and they are well coached,” Kuenzel said. “We’ve shown improvement through our two scrimmages so far and now are looking forward to putting it all together this week.”
