Bandera boys soccer records big road win over Wimberley

The Bandera boys soccer team picked up a big win over Wimberley Tuesday night, battling the cold and windy conditions to edge the Texans in a 3-1 finish.
It was a big win for the Bulldogs, giving the team a firm grasp on fourth place in the district standings four games into the district schedule.
“The guys really battled well in the cold, wet and windy weather,” Bandera Head Coach Westley Miller said. “Those are the types of conditions that can make or break a team in a big district game, and I was proud of how they fought through it and took care of business.”
Bandera took advantage of having the wind at its back in the first half, and despite missing on a handful of opportunities early, broke the ice on the scoreboard with a goal from Maverick Short. Just before the half, Diego Gomez played a ball in the box that led to a Wimberley own goal, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead at the break.
The Texans cut into the deficit in the second half with the wind now in their favor, but Bandera continued to put pressure on the Wimberley defense and extended the lead after earning a penalty kick the Gomez buried into the net to put the finishing touches on the 3-1 win.
Gomez finished with three shots and one goal while Short had four shots and a goal. Connor Garrett had four saves, Nino Martinez had five steals, and Quin King, Micah McCreary, Jaymin Klein and Keegan Perales finished with three steals apiece.
“It was great to see our players encouraging their teammates even when we were struggling a little bit early,” Miller said. “We didn’t let up, and that encouragement made a big difference. One of the most impressive things about this team is how they talk about halftime adjustments together before Coach Keane and I even get to them. They’re taking ownership, and that’s going to help us as we push for a playoff spot.”
The Bulldogs will host Marble Falls in the final game of the first round of district play at 7 p.m. Friday, looking to build on the momentum from Tuesday’s win and continue to fight for a playoff position.
“Marble Falls is a new district opponent for us and we know it’ll be another tough game,” Miller said. “We want to stay focused on doing what we do well and keeping a high level of intensity from start to finish. If we do that, we’ll put ourselves in a good position to finish the first round off the right way.”
