Bandera softball returns home

By Brady Keane
The Bandera Prophet

After a heartbreaking loss to Hondo Tuesday night, the Bandera softball team traveled to the Victoria Tournament and competed against high level competition Thursday through Saturday.
The Bulldogs fell to Hondo in a 12-10 thriller Tuesday night before dropping tournament games to El Campo, Victoria West, Ganado and Bay City on Thursday and Friday. Bandera closed out the tournament with a loss to Richmond Terry and a hard-fought loss to Beeville Jones.
“We saw 26 college softball commits this weekend and competed against five who are going to pitch at the next level,” Bandera Softball Coach Keith Kuenzel said. “We had the opportunity to grow against some really high level competition, and I am confident that experience is going to pay off for us in district play.”
Against Hondo, Hannah Wells, Cerissa Fernandez, Kaydence Duckworth, Preslee Greenlee and Bailey Word tallied 2 hits apiece to lead the Bulldogs’ offense. Duckworth added three RBIs while Fernandez and Word had two RBIs apiece.
Mia Ranly finished with a hit and two RBIs in tournament play against both Victoria West and Bay City, and Wells contributed a hit and two RBIs against Beeville Jones.
While the Lady Bulldogs dropped to 3-9 on the season, they return home for a pair of games against Comfort and Natalia this week before opening district on Friday Feb. 14 against Fredericksburg.
“This will be an important week for us coming back home and trying to build some momentum before getting district started,” Kuenzel said. “We are looking forward to a couple of big crowds this week!”
