Robinson advances to state powerlifting meet

The Bandera powerlifting team extended its postseason run after senior Ashton Robinson punched his ticket to the UIL State Powerlifting Meet with a state-qualifying total at the Regional Meet in Abilene on Saturday.
Robinson was one of three Bulldog lifters competing at regionals, alongside juniors Juan Cabrera and Logan Harman. He secured his spot at state in the 165-pound division by posting a 1,350-pound total, which included a 530-pound squat, a 320-pound bench press, and a 500-pound deadlift.
Robinson will now represent Bandera at the State Powerlifting Meet on March 20-21 at Wylie High School in Abilene.
“Ashton has worked hard for this, and I’m very proud of him,” Bandera head coach Bobby Keefner said. “He showed up ready to compete, and his dedication paid off with a state qualification.”
Though Robinson was the lone Bulldog state qualifier, both Harman and Cabrera turned in strong performances at regionals as well.
Harman finished third overall with a 1,465-pound total (575 squat, 335 bench, 555 deadlift), narrowly missing out on a state qualification by just 10 pounds.
Cabrera also had a solid meet, placing 7th with a 1,250-pound total (500 squat, 285 bench, 465 deadlift).
All three lifters posted personal records at the regional competition, capping off a solid postseason effort for the Bandera powerlifting program. Bandera’s Ruby Lister also placed third at regionals on the girl’s side of the program back in February.
“It was a great showing for our program,” Keefner said. “To have four competitors competing at regionals and one advancing to state is a huge accomplishment, and we’re looking forward to supporting Ashton again in Abilene.”
