The Bandera girls basketball team had a strong showing at the District 26-4A meeting, with four players earning all-district recognition and Head Coach Cody Carruthers being named Co-Coach of the Year.
Gabby Barrera led the way as a First Team All-District selection after a standout season. Brooklyn Grabs earned Second Team All-District honors, while Taytum Moeller and Kinlee Lawlis received Honorable Mention All-District recognition.
“These girls worked incredibly hard all season, and I’m proud to see them get recognized,” Carruthers said. “We faced a lot of challenges, but they continued to push forward and compete at a high level every night.”
Barrera joined the 1,000-career point club midway through the season and finished the year averaging 18.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Grabs posted averages of 9.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists while Moeller averaged 5.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 3.8 steals. Lawlis averaged 5.1 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals as a senior.
Carruthers, who was named Co-Coach of the Year, helped lead Bandera through a competitive district slate. Fredericksburg and Davenport both advanced to the Class 4A Division I regional final with the Lady Billies moving on to the state semis before falling to Waco La Vega.
In Division II, Navarro, who the Lady Bulldogs beat in the regular season finale, advanced to the regional final as well before falling to eventual state runner-up Cuero. Bandera finished the year 18-14 and 2-8 in district.
“It’s an honor to receive this award, but it’s really a reflection of the team as a whole,” Carruthers said. “The players bought into what we were trying to build, and I couldn’t have asked for a better group to coach.”
Bandera will lose Barrera, Lawlis, Jocelyn Klein and Carly Serene to graduation but returns Grabs, Moeller, Kourtney Frerich (6.1 points, 4.8 rebounds) Cameryn Plummer (4.7 points, 1.7 rebounds), Rehbehka Gomez (2.8 points, 2.0 rebounds), and Jessi Battle (2.7 points, 4.0 rebounds).
“We are excited about the future of the program,” Carruthers said. “Obviously, Gabby is a big loss, but we have a great group of returners who gained valuable experience this year.”
