The Bandera baseball team extended its winning streak to seven games over Spring Break, defeating Hondo 13-7 and Devine 18-4 to move to 8-4-1 on the season.
The Bulldogs are finding a rhythm at the plate at the right time, with District 26-4A play set to begin this week. Bandera has scored 21, 13 and 18 runs in its last three games, building plenty of confidence heading into what will be a tough district slate.
“We are really starting to put things together,” Bandera Head Coach Cody Fields said. “The guys are swinging with confidence and we’ve had multiple players step up in big moments. It’s been fun to watch.”
In a 13-7 win over Hondo on Friday March 14, Brady Trussell, Jake Cesta and Payson Mangold each had three-hit performances for the Bulldogs. Trussell had four RBIs and Mangold added two RBIs, while Caleb Hohon went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk to lead the way at the plate.
As a team, Bandera tallied 14 hits and eight walks.
On the mound, Mangold got the win after throwing three innings while giving up one unearned run and tallying four strikeouts. Randon Wheeler threw four innings and allowed two earned runs.
The Bulldogs showed no signs of rust after a short Spring Break, knocking off Devine 18-4 on Friday, March 21. Bandera posted 11 runs in the first inning and 18 hits in the game, cruising to a dominant win over the Warhorses. Wheeler was 4-for-4 with 4 RBIs, Trussell was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, Cooper Gunderman was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Cesta was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, West Cloudt was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Mangold went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Brayden Franklin got the win on the mound after throwing two innings and allowing two earned runs while Cesta contributed two hitless innings with four strikeouts.
“We came out aggressive and set the tone right away,” Fields said. “It’s great to see our guys trusting their swings and taking the right approach at the plate.”
Bandera will now take on Fredericksburg this week, with the Billies set to travel to Bandera Tuesday night. Fredericksburg is 13-4 on the season and is coming off a 16-6 win over Llano. The only common opponent between the two teams so far this year is Comfort – Fredericksburg beat the Bobcats 10-2 on March 4, and Bandera won 21-9 on March 11.
“Fredericksburg is always tough, but I like the confidence we’re playing with,” Fields said. “We’ve got momentum, and we’re ready to compete.”
