The Bandera track and field team competed at the District 25-26 Area Track meet in Wimberley last week, and extended its season with nine athletes advancing to the UIL Class 4A Region IV track and field meet.
Regional qualifiers will compete at Texas A&M Kingsville on Friday and Saturday, April 18 and 19.
On the girls side, Madison Davis started the day by finishing 3rd in the shot put with a throw of 31-10.25. Kinlee Lawlis took first place in the long jump with a jump of 17-9, and Sidney Moore had a big personal best in the 100m hurdles to take first place as well. Lawlis went on to qualify in the 100m dash with a sub-12 second mark, setting a new school record at 11.94 to place second.
In the 4x200m relay, Merry Robinson, Milesia Casas, Moore and Lawlis placed first and broke the school record for a third time at 1:41.22. Robinson went on to place 5th in the open 200m dash, while Lawlis placed first to qualify for the regional meet.
In the final event of the night, the 4x400m relay team of Robinson, Casas, Moore and Jazlyn Dickerson improved their time by three seconds and placed 4th to qualify for regionals.
“I’m really proud of how the girls competed,” Girls Head Coach Brooke Ashcraft said. “They showed up with confidence, continued to break their own records, and pushed each other to be better. We are excited to continue building toward competing for a chance to move on to the state meet.”
On the boys side, Breydan Gherman placed fifth in the 100m dash with a time of 11.16 and sixth in the 200m dash with a time of 22.59. Sam Snavely placed 4th and qualified for the regional meet in the 400m run with a time of 51.05, and Roman Rigelsky moved on in the discus with a third-place finish and a throw of 134-5.
Gavin Spruell was 1st in the shot put with a throw of 47-11.5, and the boys 4x400m relay team (William Vidmer, Colton Boyd, Ruben Ruiz-Palacios and Snavely) placed sixth with a time of 3:35.93.
Davis, Lawlis, Robinson, Casas, Moore, Dickerson, Snavely, Rigelsky and Spruell will compete Friday and Saturday in Kingsville with a chance to advance to the UIL Class 4A State Track and Field Meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin on May 1-3.
“I’m proud of the way our team battled through a tough area meet,” Bandera Boys Head Coach Cole Hicks said. “This group has worked hard all year and it’s great to see their efforts pay off with a trip to regionals. We still have work to do, but we’re excited for the opportunity this weekend.”
