Lakehills Library hosts two art exhibits

There are two artists exhibiting at the Lakehills Area Library during the month of May, and they are Ellen Mast, displaying several of her quilts, and Martha Zook and her gift bags and paper purses.
Mast was first exposed to quilting by her mother, who quilted with friends. At the age of 10, her grandmother and great-grandmother taught her how to quilt.
As an adult, raising her children and working as a registered nurse, Mast had a lot less time and managed only about six quilts, most for gifts or fundraisers.
When her mother became disabled in 2016, Mast brought her mother into her home to care for her. That gave her more time and she decided to learn all she could about quilting.
She became interested in the many different ways to quilt, including vintage quilting and, more recently, hexified panel quilting. The photo of the Christmas Nativity quilt is an example of a hexified panel quilt.
Mast has donated one quilt which the library is raffling off at the end of summer reading for the kiddos. The proceeds will go to the library to purchase children’s books. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and can be purchased at the front desk.
Since 2016 Mast has completed 62 quilts. She says, “It is mostly the joy of the journey and the creation that speaks to my soul.”
Mast can be reached at [email protected] or 785-248-9145.
Zook has crafted gift bags and paper purses for more than 30 years. Every one is handmade from quality card stock paper, with most made from 12-inch by 12-inch sheets. Some have D-rings for stylish purses. With a few embellishments, the bags would be ready for Mother’s Day or any special day or occasion.
“They offer a lovely and elegant way to make your gesture truly memorable,” Zook said.
Zook can be reached at 210-838-4500.
The Lakehills Area Library is located at 7200 FM 1283 and the phone is 830-510-2777.
Their hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
