‘Too Many Lives Have Been Lost’
Bandera County commissioners pass resolution seeking widening of Hwy. 46

More than 1,060 people have signed a petition requesting the Texas Department of Transportation widen Hwy. 46 W. between Pipe Creek and Boerne. Citing hundreds of accidents that include multiple fatalities and serious injuries, Bandera County commissioners unanimously approved a resolution this month declaring the stretch unsafe.
Resolution No. 26-0409-08 states Hwy. 46 is “totally inadequate to handle the volume of traffic between Hwy. 16 and IH 10 in Bandera and Kendall Counties.” Kendall County commissioners are being urged to pass a similar resolution.
“Public safety is seriously compromised on this stretch of road. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), this section of Hwy. 46 has seen a concerning rise in vehicular accidents, which could often be attributed to the narrow lanes lacking sufficient shoulders for safe passage or emergency stops. With more residential and commercial developments on the horizon, the burden on this highway is set only to worsen unless action is taken,” states the petition started by Brad Dobson on Change.org.
TxDOT has reportedly committed $7 million in federal funding for intersection upgrades and confirmed a feasibility study is underway for a potential four-lane divided highway, according to an update.
