Bandera County commissioners extend disaster declaration for New World screwworm

Bandera County commissioners approved an extension continuing a Declaration of a Local State Disaster regarding the threat of the New World screwworm in Bandera County. The original declaration was signed by Bandera County Judge Richard Evans on June 25, and will remain in effect for 30 more days.
On June 3, the New World screwworm was confirmed in a calf in Zavala County. The calf has since recovered from the infestation. As of July 27, 42 domestic animal cases have been confirmed (nine active, 33 inactive), according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. No cases have been reported in Bandera County, nor is Bandera County in a quarantine zone. Evans said a portion of Bandera County south of Tarpley is in a restricted zone, which requires permission to move an animal out of the area.
Active sterile fly releases continue in the area, and they appear to be doing their job, Pct. 3 Commissioner Jack Moseley said.
