Sublime Rambling
I will do
By Vicki L. George
Special to the Prophet
Knighthood’s flower seems to wilt a little with each succeeding generation. A father whose young son learned to dance at camp in the summer said to him, “Makes you feel silly, doesn’t it, the first time you go up to a girl and say, ‘May I have this dance, please?’”
The boy looked offended. “Oh, I never said anything so old-fashioned as that.”
“No? What did you say?”
“I strolled round and looked ‘em over till I saw one that was pretty. Then I pointed at her and said, “You’ll do.”
This story came from Readers’ Digest Companion, copyright 1953.
And it reminded me of how my Hubby and I met.
We were both attending Baylor University. I was a freshman and Hubby was a sophomore. I had been to an ice-breaking party for freshmen the week before and I was so naive I really thought only freshmen could attend. However, I quickly learned that upper class men would show up to scout out the new girls.
Nothing much happened at the party and I simply returned to my dorm. About a week later, a phone call came in for my roommate. The phone was down the hall and my roomy wasn’t in, so I told the gal who came to get me that I would take the call.
When I answered the phone, a male voice asked for my roomy by name, “Sharon?” I told this guy that Sharon wasn’t in and I told him I was Sharon’s roommate Vicki.
He thought about that for a second and said, “You’ll do.”
We just celebrated our 61st wedding anniversary. I guess you could say I’ve been “doing” ever since.
