Growing Up In Bandera

I look around at the life I'm living now here in Bandera and I must say that things are certainly different that what they used to be. A lot of the things we had as kids are still around but it just isn't the same. There are numerous places around town where you can get a hamburger but most of my friends from back in the day will say they don't compare to what we could get from Zeke's. An OST swiss/mushroom burger is still my personal favorite.

Frontier Tales
The Trail Drivers of Texas

How do stories told by simple men become a part of our Texas history? About 100 years ago, there was an urgent need to capture the stories of the original trail drivers before they were all gone. An estimated 25,000 to 35,000 men drove six to 10 million head of cattle up trails such as the Chisholm Trail and the Western Trail from the end of the Civil War around 1866 to the early 1890s before barb wire and the railroads made the cattle drives obsolete.  This brief moment in time would have a lasting impact on our culture and our idea of our American identity.

Bandera ISD tackles bullying, supports mental health

It’s tough to be a kid. Aside from the daily responsibilities of school, academics, athletics, extracurricular activities and chores, kids today have the added pressure of Covid fears, the political landscape, personal and social media related stresses from things they experience, see and hear at home, from peers and online. All of this input can cause a data overload for any adult, much less someone whose brain is just five, 12 or 17 years old.

Shell-ebrating the sea turtle

On Aug. 4, at 5:30 a.m., my family and I departed our hotel room and began our bleary-eyed trek to the Padre Island National Seashore. We left home the day before with the intent of grabbing a good night’s sleep in anticipation of an early morning. We aren’t hardcore adventurers nor members of the dawn patrol surfing circuit; we were instead in pursuit of a glimpse of palm-sized turtle hatchlings slowly make their way across the sand to frothy ocean waves.

I’ve been running a little behind schedule this week - a pun that may be more appreciated as this story goes on. I generally avoid first-person dissertations, but in the spirit of a brutally honest transparency that may help someone else, I thought it befitting to temporarily lift the veil.
A word of caution for the sensitive, this story may not be appropriate for everyone.
