Fundraiser helps veterans and first responders Ride and Rise Above out of the darkness of depressionThe 9th annual Ride & Rise Above benefit is set for Saturday, April 27. The money raised will be donated to local non-profits that provide direct assistance to veterans and first responders who suffer from PTSD and depression.

Today in Texas History
On this day in 1937, a massive explosion caused the steel-framed school building in New London, in Rusk County, to collapse, killing a reported 298 people. It was the worst school disaster in United States history. Of the 500 students in the building, only about 130 escaped serious injury.

Arthur Nagel Community Clinic to host second annual community-wide Bandera Bunny Run/Walk 5KThe Arthur Nagel Community Clinic has announced its second annual community-wide Bandera Bunny Run/Walk 5K, to be held on Saturday, April 13. The race was created last year to raise needed funding for clinic patients who require additional care from medical specialists in fields such as oncology, neurology, and cardiology, but lack the means to afford such care.

Growing Up In BanderaCrossing the bridge over the Medina River on Schmidtke Road and looking upstream you can see the area around the old bridge that led to the Mayan Dude Ranch. That's where I spent countless hours as a kid. Just a one-block walk from our house and then down the bluff and I was in paradise. My mother often told me, "Glenn, you can't just live on that river.” But I gave it my best shot.

Lakehills Area Library receives national grant for small and rural libraries
The Lakehills Area Library has been selected to participate in round two of an American Library Association initiative that provides community engagement and accessibility resources to small and rural libraries to help them better serve people with disabilities. The competitive award comes with a $10,000 grant that will help the library to serve all members of the community by automating the front doors.

Sheriff candidates to square off in runoffSheriff Dan Butts and challenger Josh Teitge are headed for a runoff. Because neither reached 51 percent in the March 5 Primary Election, both candidates will face off on Tuesday, May 28.

Bulldog boys finish fourth at Bandera Invitational
The Bandera boys track and field team had another strong showing in the Bandera Invitational last week, placing 4th ahead of Devine, Hondo and Lytle while scoring points in nearly every running event.

Notes from Bandera City CouncilDuring their regular meeting, Bandera City Council members discussed the final plans making City Park an eclipse destination, a Hotel Occupancy Tax application policy, and approved an amendment to the City of Bandera Code of Ordinances Drought Contingency Plan.

Susan Junker: An industrious woman making an incredible mark in Bandera CountyIt’s easy to sit back, relax and simply enjoy the serene Hill Country, especially Bandera County. But this is far from the path Susan Junker has chosen for herself. With military experience, nonprofit management, speechwriting, public speaking, serving on various boards, and a run for county judge under her belt (to only name a few), there isn’t much the American Legion commander hasn’t attempted and accomplished with great success.

Burn Ban liftedBandera County commissioners unanimously declined to adopt a countywide burn ban, allowing the previous ban to expire. Intermittent showers, morning mist and cooler days have lowered the drought index, which is hovering around 371 to 575.
