Letter to the Editor

For months, I have listened to the outcry regarding License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology. I have seen the eyerolls, and I’ve even been met with "Nazi rhetoric,” the dangerous claim that believing in accountability and community safety is somehow equivalent to totalitarianism. Comparing a neighbor’s desire for a safe street to a dark chapter of history is a classic case of comparing apples to oranges; it is a distraction used to avoid the reality of the threats our town faces today.

Growing Up In Bandera

Coming up on four years since I lost my partner in life. Fifty-six years was not enough. Pure and simple, it just wasn't enough. I spent way too many years being young and acting like a fool, but she always forgave me even before I asked God to forgive me.

Today in Texas History

On this day in 1903, "The Eyes of Texas" was first sung. The performance took place at a minstrel show benefiting the University of Texas track team at the Hancock Opera House in Austin. The ditty soon became the official song of the University of Texas, and is even considered by some a sort of unofficial state song.

Sublime Rambling #33
Father-in-law

My father-in-law was an interesting man. Hubby and I eloped right after Christmas break while we were attending Baylor University. We informed his parents by phone about three weeks later. Of course, they wanted to meet their only son’s bride. So we promised to visit after semester exams. On the six-hour drive to my in-laws, I fretted about meeting them.
They were gracious when we arrived. After we unpacked, it was time to sit down at the dining table. While his mom went to the kitchen, my new father-in-law leaned towards me and said, “If I’d have known you were coming, I would have roasted a pig and put an apple in one end and a carrot in the other.”

In a rural county like Bandera, having 71 people come out just to hear a youth rock band play is a pretty big deal.
In April, The Bad Bombs, a youth rock band made up entirely of Bandera County students ages 12–16, put on a free concert at Bandera High School and drew a crowd of local supporters. It shows that people in Bandera County will support young musicians who are willing to work hard, take creative risks, and perform live.
