Her name is Carousel; and she called me “Mama.”
My husband Bill and I went out to eat for our 60th wedding anniversary. He had chosen Outback because he wanted one of their excellent steaks. We arrived before the dinner crowd and were seated at a booth. Then she approached our table and introduced herself as Carousel. She was petite and young and Hispanic and, as they say, “Cute as a button.”

On this day in 1913, four Black Texas women, with 18 other women, including Myra Davis of San Antonio, all students at Howard University, cofounded Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., which became an international service organization. The sorority’s first public action was to march in the Woman Suffrage Procession with national civil rights leader Mary Church Terrell on March 3, 1913, in Washington, D. C.

The Dallas Cowboys have been eliminated from the playoffs. The final nail was the Philadelphia Eagles’ 29 to 18 win over the Washington Commanders on Dec. 20.
Jerry Jones, in the ultimate Captain Obvious observation, said they’d use the final games this season to evaluate their coaching staff.

Arthur Nagel Community Clinic receives Point of Care Laboratory upgrade installation

Heart to Heart International announced a point-of-care lab will be installed at Arthur Nagel Community Clinic in Bandera. The clinic is located within the region where the Texas Flooding on July 4 occurred. ​The HHI Laboratory program aims to improve patient outcomes by implementing timely and accurate treatment protocols.

David Guerra
April 10, 2004 ~ January 5, 2026

David Guerra, 21, was a resident of Pipe Creek, and a graduate of Bandera High School. Always known for a caring and giving heart and constant smile, David went on to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Dayton, Florida, and earned many awards and accolades for his academic achievements. He was two semesters from graduation when he fell ill before Christmas. David fought briefly a battle with leukemia. He did not lose the battle - he simply finally flew into space and landed in Heaven on Jan. 5.

Esther Benedict has been sculpting for more than 34 years. She began her deep understanding of metal and how it, “moves, bends, and responds to a human hand,” when after earning a degree in Horse Management, she worked as a successful AFA-certified journeyman farrier, forging hot, handmade horseshoes.

Happenings at the Lakehills Area Library

On Monday, Jan. 19, the Christian Classics Book Club will meet. On Wednesday, Jan. 14, the Hill Country Breastfeeding Coalition will meet. Lunch is provided and any breastfeeding or pregnant family is welcome to join. On Thursday, Jan. 15, the Alamo Resource Conservation and Development Senior Lunch will be at the library. All seniors are welcome to join in for lunch, bingo and friendship at this free event. On Saturday, Jan. 17, the Lakehills Area Library Garden Club will have a presentation about seed starting. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be another event from Alamo Resource Conservation and Development, this time it will be a senior lunch and learn.

First responders honored for life-saving actions

On April 16, a 71-year-old man was attending a barbecue, and suddenly went into cardiac arrest, sustaining a head injury after falling down. EMS and Pipe Creek Volunteer Fire & Rescue first responders initiated life-saving CPR and medications.

"On Dec. 3, 2021, our lives were changed forever, when our 24-year-old son was involved in a head-on collision. He was airlifted to BAMC that night, and began his fight for life. Although my son is not in the military, the amount of support he received from this wonderful group of folks has been humbling."
