Today in Texas History
On this day in 1913, four Black Texas women, with 18 other women, including Myra Davis of San Antonio, all students at Howard University, cofounded Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., which became an international service organization. The sorority’s first public action was to march in the Woman Suffrage Procession with national civil rights leader Mary Church Terrell on March 3, 1913, in Washington, D. C.

Kerrville Genealogical Society presents Preserving the Greatest Generation: WWII Genealogy, The Society of Sons and Daughters of WWII VeteransThe Kerrville Genealogical Society will hold a general meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 21, in the auditorium of the Guadalupe River Basin Natural Resources Center, Kerrville. Resolve ThisAfter fighting a two-week flu, I’m slowly on the mend and my brain is back to working again. Well, as much as it ever did, which isn’t much. But time to press on and talk about New Year’s Resolutions. Most of you have either not made any or already failed, so I’ve done some pretty weird research to make you feel better. Let’s look at some of the craziest resolutions I’ve come across.

Arthur Nagel Community Clinic receives Point of Care Laboratory upgrade installationHeart to Heart International announced a point-of-care lab will be installed at Arthur Nagel Community Clinic in Bandera. The clinic is located within the region where the Texas Flooding on July 4 occurred. The HHI Laboratory program aims to improve patient outcomes by implementing timely and accurate treatment protocols.

Bandera Cowgirls round up for New Year’s DayThe annual Cowgirl Roundup was started in honor of all the hardworking and very talented cowgirls in Bandera County. This year’s photo included 52 cowgirls.

Lakehills Area Library artist of the monthEsther Benedict has been sculpting for more than 34 years. She began her deep understanding of metal and how it, “moves, bends, and responds to a human hand,” when after earning a degree in Horse Management, she worked as a successful AFA-certified journeyman farrier, forging hot, handmade horseshoes.

Happenings at the Lakehills Area LibraryOn Monday, Jan. 19, the Christian Classics Book Club will meet. On Wednesday, Jan. 14, the Hill Country Breastfeeding Coalition will meet. Lunch is provided and any breastfeeding or pregnant family is welcome to join. On Thursday, Jan. 15, the Alamo Resource Conservation and Development Senior Lunch will be at the library. All seniors are welcome to join in for lunch, bingo and friendship at this free event. On Saturday, Jan. 17, the Lakehills Area Library Garden Club will have a presentation about seed starting. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be another event from Alamo Resource Conservation and Development, this time it will be a senior lunch and learn.

First responders honored for life-saving actionsOn April 16, a 71-year-old man was attending a barbecue, and suddenly went into cardiac arrest, sustaining a head injury after falling down. EMS and Pipe Creek Volunteer Fire & Rescue first responders initiated life-saving CPR and medications.
