Get in touch with country
On Saturday, May 25, from 12:30 - 5 p.m., as part of the Memorial Day Weekend festivities, you can “get in touch with country.” A wonderful group of local ranchers and artisans are getting together at the Rusty Wheel (next to Sonic) to provide an opportunity for everyone to get in touch with farm and ranch animals and what they do for us. There is no admission, compliments of Bandera ProRodeo Association.
See Spot, a year old Suffolk sheep and a couple of bottle-baby lambs.
Also see an exhibit by Suzoo’s Wool Works (Jennifer Kulick) where you can learn about what can be done with the wool from these sheep (see below for more info);
-an Angora momma goat (doe) and a baby (kid);
-an exhibit by Naumann Angoras (Dale and Bonnie Nauman) where you can learn about what can be done with the mohair that comes from these angora goats (see below for more info);
-ponies provided by Peaceful Valley Pony Club (Sylvie and Victoria Kitzman);
-a momma cow and calf (compliments of Troy and Karen Konvicka);
-Wes Hatch and his longhorn;
-and Lee Haile who will enchant everyone with his western stories.
Featured exhibits
Suzoo’s Wool Works (“Suzoo’s”) has been in Bandera County since 2014. Suzoo’s is dedicated to educating everyone about the history and importance of the wool and mohair industry in the Texas Hill County and uses a lot of locally grown wool and mohair in its efforts to promote such industry. Come learn about the steps involved in the fiber arts industry, from fiber processing to the end product.
Naumann Angoras is a six-generation Angora goat operation located in Bandera County. Dale and Bonnie Naumann are immersed in the Angora goat industry, raising and showing Angora goats, judging Angora shows, serving on the boards of agricultural organizations and promoting mohair nationwide. They have presented their mohair at fiber festivals in Rhinebek, N.Y.; Asheville, N.C.; Dickson, Tenn.; Estes Park, Den. and Salida Colo.; Taos, N.M.; and in Dallas, Boerne and Kerrville. Come see how Angora mohair is sorted, picked, washed, dyed and used to create beautiful clothing.
Catch a ride on the wagon driven by Ron Dakota, or just drive down main street from the courthouse.
