Triple H Equitherapy honors horses and the heroes who ride them
By Jessica Goode
The Bandera Prophet
On a quiet road tucked in a Pipe Creek valley, volunteers of Triple H Equitherapy clean stalls, measure feed and gather tack. The horses stand dutifully as saddles are tossed onto their backs... their day's work is about to begin.
Military veterans, children and adults with special needs arrive daily for equine-assisted sessions that include therapeutic horseback riding and equine-facilitated psychotherapy. At-risk youth and those who have dealt with abuse, people with mental, physical or cognitive disabilities, and veterans who suffer from post traumatic stress are among the clientele whose lives are improved by the healing power of the horses.
Triple H collaborates with the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International Horses for Heroes program, the Wounded Warriors Project and other organizations. It is funded by donations and fundraisers, such as Saturday's Horses and Heroes event.
Amidst entertainment by the Texas Thunder Drill Team, a costume contest, Wild West re-enactors and performances by the Bandera Cattle Company Gunfighters, the horses watched from the background, silent sentries standing post.
"Every time we're out here, we're amazed at how sensitive each horse is to their rider," Jay Pennington, as Buffalo Bill Cody, said.
Triple H Equitherapy, at 791 Backhaus Road, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information, call 830-510-9515 or email [email protected].
