Ruth and Richard Hartmann, with granddaughter Hannah, are so pleased to receive a fan at the Alamo RC&D Mini-Food Pantry on June 14. Without air conditioning, fans become critical for survival in our summer heat.

Many programs available for senior citizens

The Bandera Prophet

The Alamo Resource Conservation and Development Area, Inc. is devoted to the needs of our senior citizens. Through their Senior Assistance Program, they have expanded the number of programs designed especially for our older population.
The next Health Program event will be held in Faith Tabernacle, located at 7789 FM 1283, on Friday, June 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The guest speakers are Aida Minnick, Methodist Health Ministries Wesley Nurse, and Susan Broa from the Arthur Nagel Community Clinic. Their presentation is “Heart Healthy Seniors.”
Lunch will be provided and is free to seniors and by donation to others.
At this event, all June birthdays and anniversaries will be honored and door prizes will be given out.
To better plan the number of meals, an RSVP is requested by June 19. Call 210-548-9248 or email [email protected].
The event is sponsored by Alamo RC&D Senior Assistance Program and Faith Tabernacle.
Another popular program is the Senior Mini-Food Pantry, part of the Foods & Nutrition Program, also held at Faith Tabernacle. It takes place the second and fourth Friday of each month, from noon to 3 p.m. Each applicant must be at least 55 years old and provide two bags, which they can fill with food, at no charge.
Currently, the food pantry serves 201 senior families, with 464 individuals, in the Lakehills and Pipe Creek areas. Alamo RC&D partners with Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries of Boerne to provide this service.
Alamo RC&D also has a “Keep It Cool” fan program. They will freely give fans to senior county residents in need at the Mini-Food Pantry on June 28, noon to 3 p.m., at Faith Tabernacle. At their June 14 Mini-Food Pantry, the organization gave out 10 fans with requests for more. They are asking for donations of 20-inch box fans, or money to purchase fans. Call 210-548-9248.
A popular feature of the Health Program is the weekly “Fun & Fitness” exercise class, held at Faith Tabernacle, every Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to noon. It features low impact exercises and no equipment is needed. Wesley Nurse Aida Minnick provides free health screenings. It is sponsored by Alamo RC&D, Faith Tabernacle, and the Methodist Health Ministries Wesley Nurse Program.
The newest service provided by Alamo RCD is quickly gaining in popularity. The next “Lunch & Learn” program will be held on Wednesday, July 31, in Faith Tabernacle, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. It includes a free pot-luck meal. The speaker will be Alma Aguirre of Alamo RC&D discussing “Beware of Senior Fraud.” It is held in the Food Pantry Barn and seating is limited to 18 people. An RSVP is required and participants need to bring a small pot-luck dish to share. Meat will be provided by Alamo RCD.
All Alamo RC&D programs and events are free, open to the public, and serve Bexar and all surrounding counties, including Bandera County.
Alamo RC&D is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. They have served the central Texas area since 1993. They are in need of donations, which are tax deductible, and volunteers. To learn more, go to www.alamorcd.org, email [email protected] or find them on Facebook and Twitter.
