Fundraiser planned for Brother in Blue
By Jessica Goode
The Bandera Prophet
Whether you have a poker-playing personality or are a bit of a bluffer, this weekend’s benefit Texas Hold’em tournament will unite everyone for one common cause. On Sunday, June 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., friends, family and supporters of Sgt. Matt Johnson are invited to attend a fundraiser in his honor at the Kendall Plantation in Boerne.
Johnson’s law enforcement career began in 1999, and has taken him on a professional journey from Kerr to Bandera to Kendall Counties. He became ill last year, and has been fighting cancer ever since.
Sunday’s themed event includes the Dunk-A-Deputy tank and the First Responder Donut Eating Contest, as well as cornhole and washer tournaments, dancing and, of course, a date with Lady Luck at the Black Jack and roulette tables.
If you aren’t the gambling type, the menu will intrigue your palate. Chicken quarters from Smokey Mo’s BBQ, sausage cooked on site and sides from the Hungry Horse Restaurant will be served, starting at 11 a.m. Cost per plate is a suggested $10, and all proceeds go directly to Johnson.
On July 22, 2018, Johnson, 45, was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer that has metastasized to his liver and lungs. His chemotherapy treatments have concluded, and he is now in Hospice care.
