Christian Women’s Job Corps off and running
By Vicki L. George
The Bandera Prophet
Bandera County scored a major coup with the establishment of the Christian Women’s Job Corps last year. The first session, earlier this year, was very successful, with five happy graduates.
Now it is time for the second session to gear up and the Job Corps will start accepting applications for enrollment on July 15. Applications are available at the Bandera library, Helping Hand and First Baptist Church. They can be mailed or delivered to the church.
The First Baptist Church of Bandera hosts the Job Corps as one of their ministries. The church is located at 1300 Pecan St. in Bandera and the classes and events are held in their Youth Building.
The program is free and available to women 18 years of age and older. Applications for enrollment will end August 15 and interviews will be conducted on Aug. 21-23. Class size is limited. Lunch is provided to the ladies each class day.
An Open House will be held on Friday, Aug. 23, to which the public is invited.
Orientation is Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Classes are on Tuesday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30, each week and will begin Sept. 3 and end Nov. 21. Each session lasts 12 weeks, after which the participants will graduate and receive certificates. The graduation ceremony will be on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. The public is invited.
Classes offered include Bible Study, Job Preparation, Healthy Relationships, Money Management, Health and Nutrition. A class on Raising Capable Kids is sponsored by HEB. Computer Skills will be taught using laptops donated by the San Antonio Baptist Association and HEB has provided for the curriculum.
The Christian Women’s Job Corps is an international, non-profit organization that teaches life and job skills tailored to each student’s individual needs. It was founded in 1997 and now has 200 sites across the country.
The Job Corps is a ministry of the Woman’s Missionary Union, within the Southern Baptist Convention. Its mission statement reads: “Our mission is to provide a safe Christ-centered environment that encourages spiritual, professional and personal growth to transform women, families and communities.” The Corps’ inspiring scripture is from Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to give you hope and a future.”
All council members, teachers and sponsors are volunteers. The organization seeks support from local churches. It also networks with local employers to provide jobs for the students who have successfully completed the course.
Many Job Corps participants are single moms, recovering from substance or physical abuse, overcoming legal issues or are on public assistance with a desire to be self-sufficient. All have a desire to move from dependency to self-sufficiency and are willing to accept responsibility as an intern at CWJC.
Each Job Corps site is responsible for its own funding and the Bandera site is no exception. It needs funds, or sponsors, for class materials, and the lunches to be provided to the students. To send a check, make it out to First Baptist Church of Bandera and write Christian Women’s Job Corps on the memo line. Mail checks to First Baptist Church, PO Box 340, Bandera, TX 78003. As a ministry of the church, all donations are tax-deductible.
The Job Corps needs additional teachers, mentors and volunteers. To volunteer to teach, to sponsor, or for more information, contact Coordinator Aurora Williams at 830-326-1457 or email [email protected].
