Shoot it, share it, hashtag it

The Bandera Prophet
No longer a virtual playground for Millennials and Generation Zs, social media has become a vital tool that spans generations and connects countries with one app. What started as a tool to help connect people separated by schedule and distance, online social network sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp, Skype, LinkedIn, Google+ and YouTube have become integral in education, entertainment, business plans and travel.
Localizing the trend, Patricia Moore, executive director of the county’s Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), discovered a way to collect photos published online and use them to promote Bandera. CrowdRiff, an AI-powered visual asset management company that specializes in travel and tourism, will mine photos and videos posted on Instagram that were taken in Bandera County.
During a meeting held Monday evening, Moore gathered business owners and community leaders throughout Bandera County to discuss and brainstorm the advantages of social media, and how the hashtag can tie it all together.
Once a little pound sign on the bottom corner of a touch-tone phone, no one really knew what its purpose was. Now known as a hashtag, the pound sign - or number sign - or octothorpe for telephone etymologists - or sharp symbol for musicians, the character is used to categorize information to make it easily searchable online. The hashtag has also shown instrumental in helping user-generated content trend and go viral.
Numerous suggestions topped last night’s brainstorming session, including #explorebandera, #onlyinbandera, #medinalake, #texashillcountry, #banderawildlife, #ridebandera, #shopbandera and #cowboylife.
A second meeting to further discuss what hashtags will best represent Bandera is planned for Monday, July 22, at 6 p.m., at the Bandera Electric Coop. The public is invited.
