Tomorrow, more than 800 new laws passed during the 2019 Texas Legislative session will go into effect. Here are six of them:
New smoking age: Senate Bill 21 will raise the age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21.
Keeping telemarketers honest: House Bill 1992 bans telemarketers from calling Texans using fake numbers or tampering with caller ID.
Saving lemonade stands: House Bill 234 blocks cities and counties from enforcing or adopting ordinances that regulate children who are selling lemonade or other nonalcoholic drinks on private property or in public parks.
The right to pump breast milk: House Bill 541 makes clear that women can pump breast milk wherever they want. Previous law allowed breastfeeding anywhere but didn't specify pumping.
The Dignity Act: House Bill 650 bans the shackling of pregnant women, requires a trauma screening of each incoming female inmate and requires the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to study the effects of visitation policies on women and their children.
