LAKEHILLS LIBRARY
The library invites the public to attend the 20th anniversary reception at the library on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served. They will celebrate 20 years of serving our community and honoring all those who made it possible.
Because of the reception on the 7th, the library’s monthly book sale will be the following Saturday, Sept. 14, with special deals on all books.
The library is located at 7200 FM 1283. For information, call 830-510-2777.
AMERICAN LEGION
The American Legion Post 410 will hold a yard sale on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rent a table for $10, keep all the proceeds from sales. Baked goods, snacks and sodas available and all funds raised will go toward the Centennial Celebration. Contact the Legion to reserve your table, donate items, money or baked goods.
The American Legion Post 410 Centennial Celebration Dinner is for the community and is free of charge. All are welcome to enjoy a special meal and commemorate the Legion’s 100th birthday on Saturday, Sept. 14, in the Legion Hall.
The Legion is selling tickets for the drawing to be held at the Centennial dinner. One ticket is $10 and three tickets can be had for $25. Winners do not need to be present to win.
First Prize is a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, valued at $5,000; Second Prize is an American Legion Centennial Coin Set, valued at $500; and Third Prize is a Gift Card worth $250.
There will be a separate drawing for a special prize: a gift basket with a fifth of Texas Bourbon from Garrison Brothers Distillery. Those tickets are $5 each.

LAKE AND RIVER
The BMA opened the dam gate valves on Aug. 21 and the lake is going down quickly.
On Friday, Sept. 6, our Medina Lake level was 1060.68 feet. That is down 3.52 feet, which is 91.8 percent capacity.
The Medina River had a flow of 14.8 cfs in Bandera, running 3.56 feet deep at the gage.
Please send your Lakehills and Pipe Creek news to me by email at [email protected] or call me at 210-563-1186 and leave a message.
Until next time, “¡Vaya con Dios!”
TRIVIA TIDBITS
National Grandparents Day is a holiday celebrated in various countries, with official recognition in some, and occurring on various days of the year.
In the United States, Marian McQuade has been recognized as the founder of National Grandparents Day. McQuade made it her goal to educate youth about the important contributions seniors have made throughout history. She also urged youth to "adopt" a grandparent, not just for one day a year, but rather for a lifetime.
In 1977, Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents' Day and, on Aug. 3, 1978, then-President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation. The statute cites the day's purpose: "...to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children, and to help children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer”.
We wish all grandparents a very happy Grandparents Day!
