American Legion celebrates 100 years

By Vicki L. George
The Bandera Prophet

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the American Legion and the Lakehills James F. Pearson Post 410 is celebrating this milestone in honor of all our veterans.
The Post will mark this event with a big Anniversary and Membership Dinner on Saturday, Sept. 14, in the Legion Hall, located at 147 26th St. in Lakehills. The Hall will open at noon, as will the bar, and the public is welcome.
The kiddos can enjoy the playground equipment while the older folks dance to music or tackle a game of pool indoors.
A Dart Tournament will take place at 2 p.m. and the teams take their darts seriously, as do their fans.
After the tournament, at 5:30, there will be a special ceremony officially renaming 26th Street to Legion Drive.
For the Legion members, Service Star awards will be presented.
Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. It is a membership dinner for the member veterans and, in celebration of the Centennial, the public is invited to share in the meal. It is without charge and includes pork loin roast, with sides, drink and dessert.
After dinner there will be a drawing for several prizes: a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, valued at $5,000; American Legion Centennial Coin Set, valued at $500; and a gift card, worth $250. Tickets are still available, $10 each or three for $25.
In addition, there will be a drawing for a special gift basket from Garrison Brothers Distillery, worth $300, and consisting of a Fifth of Garrison Brothers Texas Bourbon, two Bourbon snifters, two Garrison Brothers T-shirts, and two Tour Passes to the distillery in Hye, Texas. Tickets for the basket are $5 each.
A recently added prize is a gift basket offered by the American Legion Auxiliary. It includes a fifth of Vodka and assorted goodies. Those tickets are also $5 each and can be purchased at the Hall before the dinner.
Tickets for the drawings can be purchased from any veteran and at the Hall.
The American Legion is the nation’s largest veteran organization and it belongs to all veterans and their families. Their four-point mission is to serve and advocate for veterans and their families, support a strong national defense, provide patriotic youth programs giving young people a foundation for success, and promote Americanism by building community pride in our national identity.
In support of the national mission, the Lakehills Post 410 is active in Bandera County and especially in the area of Lakehills and Pipe Creek. In 2018, they sponsored a Cub Scout Pack and a Little League team. They sent two young men to Boys State, earning scholarships. Some of the members built a ramp for a disabled veteran. The Post held the annual 4th of July parade and barbecue. They held a Christmas dinner for the community, as they do each year. They also held Las Vegas Nite and two Chili Cook-Offs.
All the funds raised from Post 410 events go to local charities, such as Boys & Girls Club, Silver Sage, Arthur Nagel Clinic, Medina Lake Betterment Association, Medina Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Little League, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, school supplies for Hill Country Elementary students, and sports equipment for the Pipe Creek Christian School.
Many Post 410 members serve Meals on Wheels, are volunteer fire fighters, work with the Food Bank, volunteer with the MLBA, and serve in local churches.
The Lakehills Post 410 Hall is open to the public from Friday through Wednesday each week. The hours are from 3-9 p.m. They provide a play ground for the kiddos, dart boards, pool table, TV and music. On Tuesdays, at 5 p.m., hamburgers are available for $5. On Wednesdays, from 6-8 p.m., a dinner meal, consisting of meat, two sides and dessert, is available for $8 a plate; and Poker games begin at 7 p.m. On Fridays, at 5 p.m., dinner plates will be served for $8 each and will include entree, salad and dessert. The funds from the meals go to the Legion and support the community events.
