Book some time at the Bandera Library
By Michael Garr, Library Director
Special to the Prophet
During National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 to Oct. 15) the Bandera Library will recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate their heritage and culture. The library is adding a special Texas Tejano twist to the month-long celebration. There will be several exhibit areas including a photo exhibit documenting Bandera’s own contribution, that chronicles the life and times of J.P. “Polly” Rodriquez. You will see historic saddles, a dozen artifacts and there will also be a coloring contest with youngsters, teens and adults each having a category. During this celebration, the entire Spanish collection of books for readers of all ages will be displayed directly across from the circulation desk. Stop by and enjoy.
Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, the Bandera Library is getting a facelift on the exterior. The entire building and sidewalks and back deck will be power washed. Some tree trimming along Pecan will occur along with new paint to brighten the exterior. New lights are being added to the front and rear entrances. In the Spring, a new Texas Native Plant garden is being added along the City Hall side of the building. Finally, with a grant from the Peterson Foundation of Kerrville, a new canopy will cover the rear flagstone deck area, providing need shade and allowing the Library to add new outdoor furniture in that space. These improvements will occur through October with the new Garden a Spring project. Thanks to our special and generous benefactors.
So, it is now fall and here come the new blockbuster releases. “The Testaments” is a 2019 novel by Margaret Atwood, a sequel to the very popular 1985 “Handmaid’s Tale.” This novel takes place 15 years after Offred’s final scene in the original and is narrated by three female characters, Agnes, one daughter of Offred, living in Gilead and her other daughter, Daisy, who lives in Canada and is horrified by Gilead’s abuse of human rights and Aunt Lydia, a character from the original story. Many critics of the popular Hulu TV production feel that the writers have taken the story in a different direction than the author intended. Perhaps Atwood will correct that will this publication.
Popular author, Craig Johnson, now has his 15th book in the Sheriff Walt Longmire series, “Land of Wolves” The dustjacket provides these clues to the storyline. “Walt Longmire is neck deep in the investigation of what could or could not be the suicidal hanging of a shepherd. With unsettling connections to a Basque family with a reputation for removing the legs of Absaroka County sheriffs, matters become even more complicated with the appearance of an oversize wolf in the Big Horn Mountains for which Walt finds himself feeling more and more empathy.” The Bandera Library has the complete book series as well as all six seasons of the Netflix series on DVD.
More books are coming weekly, so check back next week for the latest news on new releases. Please stop by and see the improving exterior and our month-long celebration of National Hispanic, Latino and Tejano heritage. Read well and find new authors.
