Book some time at the Bandera Library
By Michael Garr, Library Director
Special to the Prophet
Burn survivor, business professional, charity leader, author and public speaker, Celia Belt is a modern- day warrior who has managed to overcome a life-long injury. She appears at the Library on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. She will discuss her book “Remarkably Intact” and the Moonlight Fund, a support fund for burn survivors. Please come and hear her story and help with her fundraising initiative. Light refreshments will be served.
Let’s talk books for this week and the near future. James Patterson’s sixth book this month is in collaboration with Maxine Paetro entitled, “19th Christmas,” in the Women’s Murder Club series. As the holidays approach, Detective Lindsay Boxer and her friends in the Women's Murder Club have much to celebrate. Then, a fearsome criminal known only as "Loman" seizes control of the headlines. He is planning a deadly surprise for Christmas morning, and he has commissioned dozens of criminal colleagues to take actions that will mask his plans.
John Sandford alternates between two successful series, Lucas Davenport and this month, Virgil Flowers, in the 12th book in this series, “Bloody Genius.” Virgil will have to watch his back--and his mouth--as he investigates a college culture war turned deadly in another one of Sandford's "madly entertaining Virgil Flowers mysteries" (New York Times Book Review). A little trivia for the fans of his series is that Sandford is a pseudonym for author, John Camp, a Pulitzer Prize winning author.
“Empire of Lies” by Raymond Khoury is being celebrated by many popular authors. Steve Berry says, "This is a masterpiece. A compelling saga, on a grand scale, with food for thought on every fascinating page. It's a breath of fresh air, an alternate history firing on all cylinders that will stay with you long after finishing. A stellar epic." And Brad Meltzer shares, "Alternate history . . . tons of adventure . . . this is real fun. Not just an intelligent, immersive thriller, but also a timely visit to a reality that easily could've been. So well researched and written it feels chillingly real. As thought-provoking as it is entertaining." It’s on the Director’s list of books to read, once demand for it dies down.
Military fans will welcome the latest book by P.T. Deutermann called “The Nugget.” Set during World War II, it follows a novice naval aviator, Bobby Steele, as he grows into a hero, following the tragedy of Pearl Harbor. Steele survives the most dangerous air combat in World War II, including Midway, is shot down twice, rescued twice, and eventually leads a daring mission to free prisoners from a secluded Japanese POW camp. Lots of action for a genre enthusiast.
New books arrive weekly as additions to the Children’s Library. Now on the shelves are “Grumpy Monkey Party Time” by Suzanne Lang, “Hamster Holmes, Afraid of the Dark” by Albin Sadar, “The Kindness Book” by Todd Parr and “Max and Ruby and Twin Trouble” by Rosemary Wells are just a few of the newest arrivals. Swing by on Tuesdays to enjoy the weekly Storytime, hosted by volunteer coordinator, Brittany Seaman at 10:30 a.m. There are songs, stories, crafts and snacks. Of course, there are plenty of books to check-out and take home.
Stories abound for young and old at the Library. Come by and start your journey of exploration, while finding new authors or revisiting favorite authors. Read well and be safe.
