Book some time at the Bandera Library
By Michael Garr, Library Director
Special to the Prophet
The Bandera Public Library will be closed Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 28 through Dec. 1. The library staff will enjoy time with their families, and they hope you have a chance to do the same. The Bandera Library will reopen on Monday, Dec. 2 at 9 a.m. Plan accordingly, and have plenty of books and movies to entertain yourself during the holiday closure.
November releases continue to arrive this week. Action aficionados will love the latest Oregon Files book by Clive Cussler and Boyd Morrison called “Final Option”. When the CIA realizes that the identities of three American spies in Brazil have been compromised, they turn to Juan Cabrillo and his crew on the Oregon to rescue the agents. Janet Evanovich fans will revel in the 26th book in the Stephanie Plum series, Twisted Twenty-Six”. This case will be personal for Stephanie as it involves the one person who means the most to her.
The following three titles follow a British theme. Martha Grimes 24th Richard Jury book is “The Old Success.” An unlikely trio of detectives team up to solve three puzzling murders that span three counties across England. “Lethal Pursuit” is the 11th book by Will Thomas in the Baker and Llewelyn series that is a Victorian-era mystery. The Bandera Library has all the books in this series if you need to start at the beginning of these sleuths’ adventures. And the final English mystery is the fifth in the John Madden series titled “Death of Kings.” The late Phillip Kerr said of the author, “Rennie Airth is one of the best detective writers around.” An odd tidbit is that none of these writers is English. Martha Grimes is from Maryland, Will Thomas from Oklahoma and Rennie Airth was born in South Africa.
One of the director’s favorite Michigan authors is Mitch Albom, sportswriter for the Detroit Free Press and local radio personality, who is mostly remembered for writing “Tuesdays with Morrie.” His newest book, “Finding Chika” is his first non-fiction in more than a decade. The dust jacket says, “This is a memoir that celebrates Chika, a young Haitian orphan whose short life will forever change his heart. Told in hindsight and through illuminating conversations with Chika herself, this is Albom at his most poignant and vulnerable.”
Other non-fiction books include “Sam Houston and the Alamo Avengers-The Texas Victory that Changed American History” by noted author Brian Kilmeade. In his trademark style, Kilmeade brings alive one of the most pivotal moments in Texas and American history. Mo Rocca, a popular TV correspondent and writer provides us with “Mobituaries” an irreverent and thoroughly researched book that celebrates the dead people who made life worth living.
For our young adult readers comes the concluding book in the Renegade Trilogy by Marissa Meyer, “Supernova” and even younger readers will be enchanted by “Sofia Valdez, Future President” by writer Andrea Beaty and illustrator David Roberts. It is their latest book and introduces the newest member of the Questioneers, Sofia Valdez, a community leader who stands up for what she believes.
Two new unabridged audio books have arrived. One is the previously mentioned Clive Cussler book, “Final Option” and the latest Jack Reacher adventure by Lee Child “Blue Moon.” Whether you read, listen or just watch movies, be sure to swing by the Bandera Public Library to see what is new on the shelves. It can also be fun to get deep into the stacks and explore new or different authors. If you are looking for suggestions, be sure to ask a librarian at the circulation desk. Enjoy the upcoming holidays and be safe.
