The Frontier Times Museum has on display two quilts created by local artist and award-winning quilter Mel Dugosh. Her premiere exhibition features Lady Bird and Elenora.
Lady Bird depicts Lady Bird Johnson, who was the first Texan First Lady, from 1963-1969. Lady Bird Johnson, 1912-2007, successfully lobbied for the Highway Beautification Act of 1965 thus becoming known as the environmental conservation First Lady. She was the co-founder of the National Wildflower Research Center in Austin Texas and is famously quoted as saying, “Where flowers bloom so does hope.”
Lady Bird was featured in the Power of Women Exhibit the International Quilt Festival in Houston from Nov. 3-11, 2018.
Dugosh’ second featured quilt is Elenora, which was a finalist in the 2019 USA #PantoneQuilt #PantoneQuilt2019 Living Coral Challenge. The quilt measures 50” x 68” and honors the Polish traditions in her husband’s family.
Bandera Sister City Ambassador Elenora Goodley, Dugosh’ sister-in-law, nurtures the ongoing relationship between Bandera County and City and Strzelce Opolskie, Poland. In the quilt, the birds in the tree represent both cities.
Each of the 19 individually designed Pisanki eggs represent Elenora, her Dugosh brothers and sisters, her parents, her husband and her three daughters - the appliquéd eggs are additionally accented with the living coral color. Finally the tree honors Elenora’s love for her family, its roots, continued growth and prosperity.
To see them, go to the Frontier Times Museum Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
