Lady Bulldogs go 1-3 in Hondo
Bandera's varsity Lady Bulldogs traveled to Hondo to compete in the Lady Owls home tournament last weekend.
Bandera's first opponent was against the 5A San Antonio Jefferson Lady Mustangs and although the game resulted in a 49-46 loss, it showed that the Lady Bulldogs can compete with larger schools.
Down by 11 at the half, Bandera battled back in the third to make it a six point game, 34-28, going into the fourth thanks to Kristin Salas scoring 8 and Summer Haby going 3 for 4 at the line.
"We caused several turnovers and deflections on the defensive end allowing us to close in on Jefferson’s lead," coach Kierstyn Dumont said.
Bandera kept the up tempo play on both ends of the court in the fourth and closed the gap to within three points on numerous occassions.
Breanna Stimmell lead the offensive charge with 10 points in the quarter and 19 for the contest, and Anna Guajardo, Liz MacNeil and Kristin Salas shot 83 percent (5-6) from the line collectively.
Next up was 5A, Medina Valley and they were on fire, outscoring Bandera 36-14 in the first half.
The second half was not much better, but Bandera kept Medina Valley to 26 points while struggling to find the basket.
Anna Guajardo led Bandera scoring with 12 in a 62-26 losing effort.
The third contest of the tourney pitted Bandera against 5A Uvalde.
Chelsey Graves scored 8 in the second stanza to help Bandera take a slim, 18-17, lead into the locker room at the half.
The Lady Bulldogs cranked up the offense in the second half, scoring 30 while holding Uvalde to exactly the same amount as they scored in the first half, to take a 48-34 win.
Graves led the Bandera scoring with 15 points, her best this season.
The Lady Bulldogs played against 5A San Antonio Burbank in their final game of the tourney.
Bandera, ahead by a single point going into the second, saw Burbank take a 27-23 at the half.
"Even though we were down at the half, the Bandera Lady Bulldogs continued to fight. Led by Stimmell and Salas on the offensive end, we able to cut into Burbank’s lead, but too many missed shots in the paint and being out rebounded allowed Burbank to close out the game," Dumont said.
Bandera lost by a 56-48 score.
Stimmell and Salas led Bandera scoring with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
