Book some time at the Bandera Library
By Michael Garr, Library Director
Special to the Prophet
An early reminder that the Bandera Library will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. We will be open on Monday, Dec. 23, so that is the day to load up on books, movies and audio books for the holiday season. Stop by and enjoy the seasonal decorations as well as the Christmas themed books across from the circulation desk.
Parents should take note that the Bandera Library now has almost 150 books for children celebrating Christmas and Chanukah. There are two displays featuring lovely books for our younger readers and their families. Books like “The Littles Angel,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “The Night Before Christmas” and “The Twelve Days of Christmas” are now joined by dozens of new releases from the last two years. Sharing the joy of children during the holidays can often transport your memories back to your own childhood traditions.
All 11 books chosen by the First Thursday book club have arrived and are on display at the circulation desk. Their first meeting of 2020 will sneak up on you, being on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 10 a.m. Lewis Buzbee’s “The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop: a Memoir, a History” is the first book to be discussed in the new year. All are welcome to join the discussion.
New arrivals this week include M.C. Beaton “Beating About the Bush,” the 30th book in the Agatha Raisin series. Action lovers will welcome the latest David Poyer book in the Dan Lenson series, “Overthrow: War with China and North Korea-Fall of an Empire.” This is the fourth book in the World War III series featuring Admiral Dan Lenson with several other key figures, who return in this book. As the Allies plot an endgame to the war, the complicated dance of global warfare, on land and at sea, will finally trigger the nuclear Armageddon the entire world has feared for nearly a century.
Author Jeff Lindsay is known for his successful Dexter series of books and television series. Now comes a new book by Lindsay, “Just Watch Me.” Here comes a new mesmerizing bad guy we can root for: Riley Wolfe is a master thief, expert at disguise and violent when he needs to be. It's no accident, though, that Riley targets only the .1% and is willing to kill when necessary. This is the first book in that new series.
The Library introduces a new series for kids ages eight to twelve. Known as the “What is” series, it introduces young readers to some historical topics as well as some contemporary issues. Thirty-five new books include diverse titles covering NASA, the Alamo, the Panama Canal, Pearl Harbor, the Women’s Rights Movement, the Ten Commandments, Super Bowl, the Ice Age, Woodstock, the Constitution, the Underground Railroad and Hurricane Katrina to give you a sampling of the books now available. Each book in the series includes 16 pages of photos.
For our travelers, local or winter visitors, we have the “2020 Good Sam Guide for the RV and Outdoor Enthusiast.” It is the only print edition of RV parks and campgrounds of North American and includes 2,100 Good Sam Parks, RV articles and lifestyle tips. As for the international traveler, try looking at the 38th edition of “Rick Steves Europe Through the Back Door.” The author has an envious job of spending four months a year in Europe to prepare for the new editions. His mission is to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable and culturally broadening.
Why not make more reading one of your New Year’s Resolutions? It just takes a library card and a little imagination. Great holiday wishes from the entire library staff and Board of Directors.
