Honoring fallen heroes
By Vicki L. George
The Bandera Prophet
Sunday, Jan. 19, is Texas Confederate Memorial Day, when those of us whose ancestors fought for the Confederacy honor our fallen soldiers. In 1973, the Texas Legislature officially recognized this day as a state holiday and called it Confederate Heroes Day, “To honor all who had served the Southern Cause.”
All 11 Southern states commemorate Confederate Memorial Day, each setting its own date. The national holiday, Memorial Day, was originally established to honor only the Northern soldiers who perished in the Civil War. Only after WWI did Congress officially establish the last Monday of May as the day to honor all fallen soldiers in all our wars, including the Civil War.
This writer honors her ancestors who bravely fought for states’ rights during the Civil War: Great-grandfather James King; great-great grandfather Attaway Davis and his two sons, one of whom became a POW and the other never returned; great-great grandfather Marshall Boswell, who died in battle.
