Book some time at the Bandera Library
By Mauri Guillén Fagan, Director
Special to the Prophet
In my first article in the Prophet as Bandera Library director I want to begin by saying what a warm welcome I have received. Though we were all sad to see Mike go, he’s off doing what he loves - exploring the far west Texas wilderness. I am extremely proud to be a part of this community and a part of this library.
There’s lots going on at the library so let’s get right in. On Saturday, Feb. 1, we have the monthly book sale benefiting the Friends of the Library from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. On that same day, we have a local author visit. Karen Hoskelis, a sixth generation Texas and long-time Bandera resident, has written Love Across Time (self-published 2019). A descendent of Scottish immigrants, Hoskelis tells the story of a Hill Country woman who inadvertently finds herself in a place and a time she does not expect.
Every Saturday the library hosts a Dungeons & Dragons game from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you are interested in joining the game email banderadnd@gmail.com. All ages are welcome. For the kiddos, Tuesday mornings from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m., we host Storytime. Tuesday afternoons our local unofficial Pokemon league meets at 3:45 p.m. We also have regular meetings of classes including a watercolor class, ESL and an acoustic music group. If you would like more information about any of these events, contact the library at 830-796-4213 or register for our monthly newsletter so you don’t miss a thing.
Some new titles coming in include the highly anticipated All the Ways We Said Goodbye, a collaboration between three authors who are all well-known for their novels set during WWII. In this story that spans the two World Wars and the turbulent years between them, three women survive the chaos, love and loss to find each other at Paris’ famous Ritz hotel.
American Dirt is the latest selection by Oprah’s Book Club. Lydia Quixano Perez is a bookstore owner who lives a charmed, comfortable life in Acapulco with her journalist husband and their young son. When her husband publishes an exposé of the local cartel kingpin their lives are changed irrevocably. The novel is being hailed as a “new American classic.”
If you have been looking for a new series start, we have recently collected the Ian Rutledge series by Charles Todd. Rutledge is a WWII veteran turned detective who is keeping a secret from his fellow police officers – he suffers from PTSD and hears the voice of a fallen soldier. The latest installment, A Divided Loyalty, comes to the Library in February.
Lastly, the library would like to express our gratitude to our patrons who have given so generously that we can continue to stock the latest titles. We are extraordinarily thankful.
Happy tales, y’all.
