Effective at the end of the month, Bandera City Council Member Brice Cavanaugh has submitted his resignation as an elected official.
“I am going to be moving outside of the city limits for a job opportunity that I just cannot overlook,” Cavanaugh said. “No longer being eligible, I am forced to resign my position on City Council.”
For those who may wonder what the fate of Cavanaugh Coffee Company may be, the owners of TJ’s at the Old Forge have purchased the business and will continue to operate it.
“One of the missions for Cavanaugh Coffee Company was to bring awareness to the non-profit Operation Overwatch, which is where we rescue dogs and train them to be service dogs for veterans and first responders,” Cavanaugh said. “With my focus on the coffee shop, I believe I have gotten away from the work that was actually necessary for Operation Overwatch. This opportunity that’s come up has helped me refocus and get back in touch with getting Operation Overwatch being at the forefront.”
Cavanaugh said the weekly dog training classes will continue in Bandera and San Antonio, as well as expand to Austin.
“We’re heading into our fifth year. We rescue dogs, find those that are appropriate to be service animals and then we pair those up with veterans, first responders and some civilians that need assistance with PTSD, minor traumatic injury or mobility assistance needs,” Cavanaugh said. “Our slogan is healing at both ends of the leash. I like to think that by helping the dog we’re helping the person as well, and that we are fulfilling that mission.”
Cavanaugh said he feels he’s been part of steering certain projects in the right direction during his time as a Bandera City Council member.
“When I first ran for city council, one of the things we talked about was the streets, and we don’t have the streets right now where I’d like them to be, we’re definitely going in the right direction. We’ve got a study coming out that we are working on funding now. We’ve got several plans in place,” Cavanaugh said. “It’s important that we get the streets right. Also a lot of work has been done with the water system. We are working on a new water treatment facility and projects immediately outside of the city limits at Mansfield Park to bring more tourism here.”
Cavanaugh said he notified the mayor yesterday. Elected two years ago, he said he is unsure whether council will choose to leave his seat vacant or appoint someone to complete his unexpired term. He moves to Austin on Saturday.
